Help! GF put washer fluid where the anti-freeze goes!

Like i said!

Does this pose any sort of threat to the car? She has a 2003 nissan xterra.

JStrider 02-02-2004 04:59 PM

well im not expert.... but both are mostly water.... and some washer fluids even have stuff in em so they dont freeze....so it *probably* wont hurt anything....

but its not made to be in there... so i would definently drain it out and put in antifreeze...

MSD 02-02-2004 05:32 PM

Drain the radiator, give it a quick flush, and put new water and coolant in. That stuff is not meant to be in a radiator.

tuffrr 02-02-2004 06:25 PM

I agree with MrSD. Flush the radiator and then refill with correct fluid.

Ditto.

Hummm thats sounds a little familiar, My GF one time put Anti-Freeze in the windshield washer!

89transam 02-03-2004 02:02 PM

Thats better than putting it where the oil should go.

CheeseButtons 02-03-2004 09:06 PM

What was your GF doing under the hood to begin with?

Hah! Yeah, i'm w/ everyone else on the flusing of the system. And give her a few spankings to make up for all your trouble..:D

Elitegibson 02-04-2004 07:18 AM

I wouldn't think it'd hurt just being in there, but it'll boil before antifreeze does. Def flush.

that would screw the motor up really good!

mazak 02-04-2004 07:36 PM

how much,was added?

powerclown 02-04-2004 09:51 PM

theres a *really* good joke here somewhere...:hmm:

albion_t 02-05-2004 06:54 AM

I can't see it being a problem. As mentioned above, the wiper fluid is water and alcohol ( with some color thrown in ).

I though Alcohol made water evaporate.

It won't hurt it. no biggy. if you are really freakin about it, drain and refill with a 60/40 mix of water and antifreeze.

Im all for women under the hood of vehicles doing their own maintenance, but ONLY if they can read.

the washer fluid bottle says clearly on the cap: "Washer Fluid ONLY"

the radiator overflow/reserve bottle says clearly on the cap "Antifreeze/Coolant ONLY"

if she cant or wont read, then she does NOT belong under the hood of any vehicle.

Enka 02-10-2004 11:14 PM

haha yea i wish my gf could read some of these comments cuz they are EXACTLY what i was thinking when she called me...

the reason she was under the hood was because it is her car, and i was at work. :|
but so far nothing has happened to her car, so uh...i guess that is good news?

Not sure how much was added cuz i kinda forgot about it, but i dont think it was that much. Her car is a few months old so im assuming that new cars come with plenty o antifreeze...

she CAN read this (assuming, of course, that she can read, which has yet to be established). just email her the link to this thread.

noblejr 02-11-2004 10:51 PM

If she just topped off the reserve tank, I'd just empty that and refill it. Not much will have actually been pulled into the cooling system unless she has a leak.

gorilla 02-14-2004 01:21 PM

this is the only thread title that made me laugh out loud... that's freakin hilarious, your woman obviously has no reason to be under the hood

theblackmax455 03-01-2004 12:16 PM

there is no reason to take the chance, drain the block and radiator at least, along with the resevoir, and refill them with a mixed antifreeze.......especially come summer, you don't want anything that isn't coolant in your motor coolant passages.....

Oh by the way, if you don't know exactly how, just buy the Haynes manual, its a good thing to have anyway, and it will give you the step by step where the drains are located and everything.........Good Luck

Actually that's pretty harmless. In a pinch, you can use antifreeze for windshield fluid, but not vice versa.

fnaqzna 03-22-2004 07:07 PM

It could be much worse. :)
