Wish I had a V8

Finally found a way to link to images, a few month ago I mentioned my Porsche V8 conversion, well over the winter break I decided to make some progress.

Nice:D

Tiger69z 01-24-2004 10:44 PM

I want a v8 in my stang too :)

Dixie_Wrekked 01-24-2004 11:23 PM

I gotta V8 in my truck, it sure does help when I'm hauling my boat :)

JStrider 01-24-2004 11:33 PM

i wish my ford explorer had a v8... or atleast a decent v6.... i cant even hold 75mph going up a hill on the highway... its pretty lame...

Dixie_Wrekked 01-25-2004 12:12 AM

do you have the 4.2? or is it an older model?

JStrider 01-25-2004 12:36 PM

93.... im pretty sure its a 4.0.... somewhere i read it had like 150 or so horsepower... i dont really know... i just know it doesnt seem to be enough...

Dixie_Wrekked 01-25-2004 01:01 PM

you are right it is the 4.0, the 4.2 V6 is the new V6, i have the 4.6 V8 in my F150

But I may be just preaching to the choir

Locke 01-26-2004 06:42 PM

4.6 v8 in my cougar. that thing can haul. I can never go any lower ever again. I refuse to.

ducati999 01-26-2004 10:53 PM

dang nice conversion.......cant beat a v8!

castex 01-27-2004 04:59 AM

Oh yes you can!

The finest engines in my opinion come with cylinders in multiples of 6: BMW's in-line 6, Porsche's boxer flat 6...
The very best engines have traditionally always had 12 cylinders; they make v8's sound lumpy and unrefined, tend to have a better top end (rev higher), and are just much better all round.
There, I said it.

Zephog you must be commended on doing something that appears to be wholly illogical:) Congratulations!

Ya V12's will always be better, but think of the gas those things suck up!

Elitegibson 01-27-2004 11:27 AM

So, if I just get a few 4 cylinders together, I'll make myself a "Y"12.

Scorps 01-27-2004 11:50 AM

what is better a V12 or a W16?

coventryblack 01-27-2004 02:13 PM

I can't really recall any good V12s... Sure it sounds awsome and gives a fella mad bragging rights but looking at it by hp/cu.i or hp/lbs. they all suck it up. The V12 in the McLaren F1, which is probably the pinnacle or close to it has faily low numbers for a 6.1L engine in a car of its class. Its just a super light freakin car, even the sound system components are lightened beyond belief.

thadon 01-27-2004 02:38 PM

very interesting, beats my project

zephog 01-27-2004 02:39 PM

Well castex, you know what they say, opinions are like "aXXXX" err belly buttons, everyones got one. I am currently looking for a NA 3.0 when the v8 fell into my lap. Figure I can play with this for awhile, then acquire and rebuild the 3.0 at my leisure...

coventryblack 01-27-2004 03:07 PM

Your going to get so much more horsepowere and torque for so much less money than you ever would with the 3L. My only question is the weight discrepancy. What is the difference and which one is lighter. Fortunately its not uncommon for a V8 swap to be lighter. Interestingly, swaping a Small Block Chevy for a Jag V12 results in almost 300lbs. weight savings. and believe it or not swaping a Buick 215 (Land Rover 3.5/4.0) V8 for a BMC 4cyc. results in 200lbs. less.

TM875 01-27-2004 05:57 PM

Yes, V8s are nice.

I'd love to go back to the days when all cars have one. Can you imagine a V8 powered Mini Cooper?

Personally though, I enjoy the one inside my Merc S class. ::Laughs at you::

BonneFan 01-27-2004 09:20 PM

I love my V8...4.0L Northstar

Oh my god you are putting ideas in my head!

zephog 01-28-2004 06:08 PM

Anyone see the pic of the 5liter v8 focus svt..what a sleeper that would be

TM875 01-28-2004 06:57 PM

yea, here is the linky:

V8 Focus:

My friend seriously considered doing that, but ended up dropping a Mercury Cougar V6 into his Foci.

Scorps 01-29-2004 12:57 PM

So they made a Focus V8 powered but front wheel drive?

Dumb move!

zephog 01-30-2004 11:25 AM

No actually the conversion changes it from front to rear wheel drive. Here's a link to more detail

Well good move by them...making a V8 powered car with front wheel drive isn't smart!

BoomTruck 02-01-2004 05:54 PM

I like my 7.5l V8. Mileage is less than perfect, but it makes life so much easier when you have a tendency to hook onto heavy objects (occasionally even ones with wheels under them) with the intent to move them.

Of course, there are some nice inline 6 engines out there...For instance A 14 liter Cummins running 600 horsepower and a little over 2,000 foot pounds of torque. Unfortunately, I can't fit that into an F-350.:(

So thats the Ford big block?

BoomTruck 02-04-2004 09:58 PM

Yep. The good old 460.

Hummm I thought Fords numbers where always lower then chevy...liek the Chevy 305 is the same size as the 302 for ford...and Dodge was alway higher like the 360 is the same size as the 350....but its all just numbers!

bjam22 02-17-2004 03:39 PM

Ford has/had:
Small Block 289,302,351
Big Block 351,390,427,428,429,460

Chevy has/had=
Small Block 283,302,305,327,350,400
Big Block 396,402,427,454, then 502, and now 575

Chrysler/Mopar has/had=
Small Block 318,340,360
Big Block 383,426,440

There have been many many others, but these have been the most popular.
Also all of these can be bored/stroked to practically any Cubic Inch number and around 60 Cubic Inches = 1 liter.

The only short-coming of W-engines is that they require very thin connecting rods, as the crankshaft is much shorter than V-engines. This prevents them from becoming racing engines. Tight cylinder heads may also limit its breathing and ventilation.

So, V12 it is...

One mistake there on the chevy small block, it was the 301 not the 302;)

I just had to respond to this, because it was that absurd.......Have you ever heard of a Murcielago? Maybe a 575 Maranello or an Enzo? These are fine products manufactured by the folks in Europe that work for Lamborghini and Ferrari, and I think you got a lotta balls saying that those motors aren't that great.

irseg 03-16-2004 02:48 PM

I like the 2.3 turbo 4-banger in my Thunderbird just because it's so different, and surprises the hell out of people who ride in it when I tell em the engine it has. :) It will certainly move.

However I like the DOHC 4.6 V8 in my Mark VIII a lot more. When it comes to engines in everyday cars, you just can't beat a V8 for smoothness, low end torque, and the sound.

Or the classic 300/6 Probably the best small block Ford truck engine they ever made.

Common Chrysler big blocks also include the 361 (medium duty trucks mostly) and the 400 produced in 72-78 and found in anything bigger than a Dart. And the 318-360 started out at 273.

Ford also made a 400. Supposedly a real gas pig.

Heh, cute little turbos that T-Bird has. We had a pair for experimentation purposes on the SAE car.

irseg 03-17-2004 02:43 PM

Yeah, it's a tiny little thing, especially the IHI on the 87-88 models. They spool up nice and quick. :)

What is this SAE car you speak of?

FastShark85 03-17-2004 05:16 PM

Gotta love the V8

What kind of car is that engine from?
