Stupid heater problem with my car
Well my car is a 1987 Cadillac Sedan Deville. I'm having a really stupid heater problem. For some reason when my heater is on defrost on the high setting it fogs up my windows and the air has a small hint of antifreeze scent. Earlier in the day I checked my thermostat and I wasn't getting any upper radiator hose pressure. So I changed my thermostat. (I put my old thermostat in a boiling pot of water and the old one didn't open) Before I changed it the air coming out of the defrost smelled heavily like antifreeze. Does anybody know what could be causing this problem?

sounds like you're heater core has gone bad to me. not a fun job.

hi,.on the passenger side ,floor board is it damp,or wet under the mat or carpet? if so its the heater core.
|
The only way i can think of to smell antifreeze in the passenger compartment, would be through the heater core. If your smelling some, chances are its leaking. Not too expensive of a part, but can be a pain in the ass to get to.

Yes, the heater core has a leak...... probally just a pinhole now, antifreeze is dripping into the heater ducts then the hot air is causing the moisture to fog the windshield.

Eeek I called the local mechanic and he said for a rough estimate its about $500 with parts and labor to fix..........i think i'll do it myself...I do have a gm shop manual that should make the job easier.

of that 500 bucks, ill bet that about $450 of it is in labor too. Once you get to it, its an incredibly easy job to replace. In some cases though (like mine :( ) you end up completely dissasembling the dash and moving it out of your way. And that takes quite a bit of time. Probably took me about 4-6 hours to do, and i had to find all the bolts and figure out how the dash was on, so it went slower than it would at a dealer. All in all, get a free day and do it yourself.

Well talked it over with my father and he said do it myself. Not worth putting that much money into something I can do myself. Me and a friend are gonna work on it tonight....I'll document the whole thing and post pics for yah guys.
