found a surplus swiss army truck that I really want.
The Pinzgauer.

Anyone have any thoughts on this

I think that is a 718M model. Does it have a 5 cylinder volkswagon engine it? The new ones are turbo diesel. It's pretty cool, just don't plan on highway driving. Arnold Schwarzenegger owns a custom built one with fuel injection and higher gearing.

The ultimate for me would be a Unimog 421 with a soft top. It's the short wheelbase model. Who needs monster horsepower when you got 20 speeds and 19.1" of ground clearance with decent articulation from the factory. That's without putting on bigger tires.

no its a 712m, air cooled 4 banger, the diesel are too new to be imported (they have to be 25+years old). A friend had a mog and it can go anywhere,slowly, lots of gears but I would like to drive on road and off road. The pinz top speed is about 65+ mph.

That's not bad. My old Series Land Rover could only hit that going downhill with a tail wind.

The portal axel is what makes these type of trucks special. They multiply the torque and give ground clearance for the whole truck, driveline and all. I was drooling over these when I was searching for 9" Ford parts.
