CD player through car speakers

Have you seen those old hookup things where you can take a portable CD player in your car and hook it into your car radio and listen to CDs like that? What are those called?

you mean those cassette looking things that hooks your discman into the car cassette player?

i´m fairly certain they´re just called cd car kits...
they break really easily.

they usually cost about $30.. i think... in Sydney, you can pick them up at all old electronics stores.

They probably have the word "adapter" in them. I'm pretty sure it's a cord that connects a discman to a cassette tape, then the tape goes into your radio. I've never heard one, but the only one I've ever used got jammed in my radio the first time we tried it. Had to get it out with pliers. It ruined the adapter and my radio.

I had one when the car I drove didn't have a CD player, and my dad uses one in his car still. Never had a single problem, except for the CD player itself falling down. Make sure you have a place to put that.

I used to have a portable CD player in my older car. I hated the fact that I had to keep it from skipping by making padding around it (to keep vibrations down), and the fact that it wasn't even my CD player.

Then, after a small tub of "body butter" (no joke) exploded in my glove department, the whole car became greasy and smelled like cocoa butter. This greased up the CD player and it became impossible to work correctly.

The body butter was my sister's. Seriously.

Hm.... so I guess essendoubleop can't have a tape adapter and body butter both on his christmas list. That's gonna be a tough call there.

Anyway, I used one for quite a while. Used it with my Rio Volt MP3 CD player, even. Although the quality might take a noticable dive, if you're an audiophile. But it was good enough for me, didn't really have too many problems. The only things that happened were 1) had to do something to keep the CD player cushioned to keep it from skipping, and 2) had to warm it up (by sitting on it ) during the winter. I'm sure these won't be problems in every CD player though.

I have used the cd-cassette adapters and find they work pretty well, though you do have a bit of fidelity loss. and as noted, the problems with the cd player skipping.

look closely at your radio/cassette player, sometimes (rarely) they have input jacks that allow an auxilliary input. if you have one, use it instead of the cassette adapter

i've used one, it was okay, kindof a pain though, having to turn the radio to "tape" then having to play with the cd player itself, but not TOO much hassle. and it's a cheap solution

I would ask for a new head unit with a cd player in it

I never had a real problem with the audio cassette adapter to get sound to the car stereo, but the sound quality was never great and after some use/abuse the sound quality would fade in and out.

Good luck if you decide to use one (it is obvioulsy cheaper than a new car radio, but also not as good).

hey fellas, there are two other options to consider:

1) getting a little FM transmitter that plugs into the top of your output device (MP3, CD whatever). This can be bought for next to nothing from radio shack. It then transmits on a preset frequency or two so all you have to do is tune in your car stereo to that frequency and out it comes with FM clarity.

Note: very funny if you set up the right channels in some chick's house on the stereo, and then amaze her with your ability to 'predict' the next song. Man... the favours I have exacted using this gag

2) You get a jack lead out the top of your mp3/cd straight into a jack hole on the car stereo head unit.

Note this is is very rare but by far the best. Why these car stereo clowns don't wake up and smell the coffee amazes me. I have to butcher all my car stereos to do it.

I've used mine with regular cd players, Rio Mp3 players, and Rio Volts, and it has never given me problems either.

Just be sure to get the power adapter too so you can plug it into the car, therefore being able to put the volume of the device all the way up and not waste batteries...the higher the volume of the discman/whatever, the better quality will come through the car speakers.

the FM transmitter sometimes makes for lower sound quality as per the new iPod FM transmitter.

And as far as the AUX port.... the new MINI has one available for $40 from the dealer...now mind you it's what maybe $4... but you don't have to do anything but drop your car off and pick it up and it's still under warranty

Here's how I see it:

$30 for a car kit that will sound like crap through your factory deck.

$100 for an inexspenve yet reliable cd deck that will sound infintely better. (Kenwood makes cheap ones that sound good)
