Power Steering Box Problems

I need one of you motorhead's help in a big way here. If i cant fix this problem, a planned road trip will hve to be cancelled for the weekend. I have a 94 chevy van that's steering box has quit holding fluid. The leak is comin from a hole on the back of the box, in a boss cast on the back of the box about a quarter of the way from the top. All the parts stores and dealers have been no help in figuring out if this was a plug hole or soemthing of that effect. We really dont want to drop the box. Is this a plug hole or somethinug that can be capped with jb weld or something well enough to last a few weeks?

Personally, I wouldn't do that. Go to a salvage yard, and get another one. I'm not sure what is involved in R&R, but steering isn't something you want to fuck around with.

examine the hole carefully. does it look like it was made as part of the design or does it look more like damage of some kind? if it looks like its supposed to be there, is it threaded? if so, then it may be that a plug was there and worked its way out. sounds much like on rear differentials, where the plug hole is located near the top, and you fill with fluid until it starts running out the hole, the replace the plug.

if it is NOT threaded, then the only thing I can of is that it is similar to the weep hole on water pumps (which is a place where they will start leaking right before the pump fails - sort of a warning device).

Or go to a car parts store and ask if you can look at a replacement one and see if that one has the hole your talking about.

i say dont screw around if it doesnt look like it belongs there. call up your local boneyard, a "new" one shouldnt be too much. As far as installing it, might want to get a friend to help. Im haunted by how hard the windshield wiper motor on my dads mini van was to change. Unless the pump is readily accesible dont go it alone.
