New Lexus To Head Tokyo Show-stoppers

his is the shape of things to come for the next Lexus GS430. And if you think it's radical, wait until you discover what's under the bodywork.

The car aims to rival BMW's 7-Series and Mercedes' S-Class, and it's clear Lexus is daring to be different in styling as well as technology. With a 4.3-litre V8 hybrid engine producing more than 300bhp, the car is four-wheel drive and promises to set a new performance benchmark for Lexus in August 2005.

It's also likely to offer brake-by-wire technology, which has so far featured only on Mercedes production cars. The newcomer is important for two reasons. Not only will it be the first Lexus to be created entirely by the new research and development team, it will also be the first Lexus-badged car in Japan.

After launch, the GS430 will be joined by the production model of the LF-X concept, a more powerful version of the RX300. The GS wasn't the only star of the Tokyo Motor Show - below are some of the more unusual cars...

*edit* - forgot to put my own comment on it.

I don't like the "Probe" style mirrors, where the wedge goes right up to the mirrors. The large grill isn't "Lexus" to me. It looks cheap.

Halx 11-06-2003 06:32 PM

I dont like the bell shape silhouette. And where are the side mirrors? It's an ugly piece to throw into the mix with the 7-series, which is beautiful in my opinion.

Snakebyt 11-06-2003 07:23 PM

has a nice profile, but im not crazy about the front end.

bigoldalphamale 11-07-2003 06:41 AM

as with most other lexus' (save the 96-99 GS) it looks like butthole. nonetheless, i am sure the inside is as comfortable and roomy and packed full of fun lexus gadgets and technology. not to mention that the lexus v-8 was already very quick, so a tuned up version of that motor, coupled with a bomb interior makes for a pretty standard lexus. i'd buy it. (i like the AWD feature too...i wish my maxima had it :( )

Elitegibson 11-07-2003 10:37 AM

Start looking closely at Toyota/Lexus performance coupes. There's a Supra on the horizon, and it'll prolly share a platform with one of them.

irseg 11-07-2003 11:01 AM

It looks like they just grafted a 350Z rear end onto a Mazda. Can't they come up with something original for a change?

I think the front looks like an ugly Infiniti FX35/45, only a car version. The rear is just ugly. I don't like the direction of this car at all.

I'm sure it's a great car. Lexus knows how to pull off boring luxury.

Peryn 11-07-2003 12:41 PM

Yuk. Gross. How is this compared to a 7 series? It looks like a subaru forrester in that its not quite an SUV, but not any sort of sedan. Its got too much ground clearance, and i cant stand the shape at all. Also, that tread pattern is weird, and it looks like its got a little too much negative camber just sitting there. Cant image it would look good with a few peoples weight in there.

Jonny123 11-07-2003 04:39 PM

I'm pretty neutral on the car, but that front emblem....good christ, scale that thing down. that is about 75% larger than it needs to be!

good point.
what are those little thingies where the side mirrors should be.
perhaps its got cameras instead of mirrors... that´d make sense i guess... i think theres one out atm with rear cameras.

i think we´ll have to wait and see if this really does compete with the BMW... i´m not sure it will.

sTghezzo 11-07-2003 10:54 PM

I dont like this one. The body style and lines are just not appealing. the back looks, i dunno, not todays style, and the front just doesnt look good at all

looks like a Volvo with WAY too many face-lifts, I wouldn't drive it if I got it for free.

hahaha 11-12-2003 01:18 PM

UGLY, id drive it, but UGLY. Especially in the front.

Grondar 11-12-2003 01:20 PM

Sorry no.

Just doesn't click for me.

It tries way too hard to look like a spaceship.

yellowgowild 11-15-2003 08:46 PM

If they could get rid of the wheels and make it fly I would buy one.

potato 11-17-2003 04:59 PM

Im sure if u would see one of these on the street you would make sure to look again..

Stare At The Sun 11-17-2003 05:32 PM

I would drive it, i wouldnt pay what they will ask for it, but i'd drive it. However, i dont like the "lf" It doesnt really have the ring to it that "sc" or "lx" does, i dunno sweet car, just not something that is worth it to me..

Tech 11-18-2003 02:12 PM

the side-mirrors (as stated before) are little cameras that are projected on screens in the car.

i personally think it looks okay, the wheels are sweet, and i like the hood/nose... but it looks like there is no grill and no exhaust... no air intake or exhaust? makes me think no engine :P

though on second look... if the "grille" as it is were folded slits that opened like blinds when the car turned on, allowing air in, that would be *sweet*

There have been plenty of grille-less cars for years. My '88 T-Bird, for one. They just scoop up air from underneath. And it looks like that Lexus could hide its tailpipes in the bumper.

Cynthetiq 11-18-2003 03:18 PM

F body had no grill...Corvette, NSX, there's plenty of them

wrongfullyaccuzd 11-18-2003 04:06 PM

looks like garbage
