Fiero Engine Swap
Hey all, not often do i visit this thread... but now i have a question.
I have an 86 Pontiac Fiero. The engine is sorta kinda dying, but the ignition system sucks, and since ill be doing that work, im thinking of putting a chevy small block 305 in it (yes, they fit). now what i need toknow is... will i need to do suspension work, new tranny (transmission you sicko) and so on? if anyone has a good site about stuff like this (that covers fiero's and even other cars) i would love to know. or if you know off the top of your head (keyword: know, no guessing) let me know! thanks a bunch! |

I dont have any sites right now, but ill do some looking around. I hear the popular swap is 88 (i think that was the last year..if not then whatever the last year is) GT .. and putting a corvette engine into it. I have seen pictures and it takes a bit of work stuffing it in there, but it makes for one incredibly badass car.
I can pretty much garauntee you that you will need to stiffen up at least the rear suspension. You will probably need all sorts of custom mounts for the engine and tranny. I wouldn't expect to find a transverse tranny that mounts up to a SB Chevy...might need some custom work there, im not sure. Also if i remember right you will end up putting in a stronger tranny, probably a 6 speed. When/If i find some links Ill post them.

If you're going to use a SBC, use the 350, not the 305. The 305 is weak, and doesn't have the aftermarket support. You'll spend less in the end doing the 350. Another conversion to consider is GM's supercharged 3800. There is a discussion board dedicated to this swap, it being: www.l67swap.com

the SBC in a Fiero sounds like a killer swap, I was reading a magazine the other day, Car Craft or Hod Rod and this chick had a Fiero w/ a SBC comversion, I was amazed. Now that is a sleeper and a half of you take an 88 and drop a 350 into it. Another wicked conversion I like is a SBC in a Volvo

v8 archie is an excellent site. You will not have to change suspension components unless you want, and the factory Fiero transmission has held up to some fairly stout SBC's. The Northstar motor is also a common swap, though it will cost you more and they are said to have problems when a stick is placed behind them.
