The car quiz thread

Ok here is how this thread works.....first I post a question...then someone posts the answer...plus another question to follow up don't forget to do this!!!!.....pretty much any question flys....
To start off I will post an easy one....
What does GTO stand for? (as in Pontiac GTO)

wrongfullyaccuzd 09-21-2003 10:34 PM

"Gran Turismo Omologato."

what's the significance of the 28 in "Camaro Z28"?

Rippley 09-22-2003 01:25 AM

Apparently you have everybody stumped. I'll give it a shot, albeit probably a wrong one... 28 stands for 1928, the first year the built a camaro....? I just spent 2+ minutes googling, and I got nothing...

Now, my question(if I get to ask one, even though my answer was dubious...?): What company is responsible for the fastest sedan in the world? For bonus points, who drove it for the record attempt?

*edited because I came up with a better question*

laxative 09-22-2003 01:29 AM

I think it's a part # for the 302 engine. I could be wrong, and I lack another question.

Ashton 09-22-2003 02:07 AM

Z-27 is the RPO number for the early Camaro Super Sport package, and Z-28 simply followed it sequentially..........

Packard built a automatic clutch system....... what year was it introduced and what was it called?

peacy 09-22-2003 04:42 AM

It was called Ultramatic and it waas developed in 1949.

Which manufacturer used ABS in their mass produced cars? And when?

Ashton 09-22-2003 02:01 PM

Actually it was first called Electromatic and was introduced in 1940.........

General Motors was the first to use ABS as standard equipment, I don't remember what year...... Cadillac started using them in 1971 but I think they were optional.

peacy 09-22-2003 02:19 PM

The first production car to use ABS as standard equipment was the Jensen FF in 1965.

ducati999 09-22-2003 09:41 PM

fastest sedan is the mercedes e55 amg.....0-60 in 4.2 seconds....well brabus does make a v12 e series, but that is not a production car.... now the question.....how much power do the current big rig motors put out?

Peryn 09-22-2003 11:30 PM

hm...kinda late, ill hafta look later. On a semi-related note, saw one in the equipment trader from 1997 (i think) ... 400 (or 650, cant rememer) HP and gawdaful amounts of torque, mated to a 13speed tranny for under 20k. I was surprised at how cheap used ones go for. and 97 isn't exactly really old...

Well, it's not 4.2, it's 4.7 secs. The same as the Audi RS6.
The Subaru Impreza (2.0 WRX STi Prodrive PP) does 0-62 in 4.6 secs.

laconic1 09-23-2003 11:57 PM

I was just looking up the specs on a Detroit Diesel Series 60 engine. 14.0 Liter engine putting out 1850 Ft-lb at 1200 rpms.

preluder 10-01-2003 03:18 PM

what happened to the questions???

The WRX is 2.0 liters while the STI is 2.5 liters.

Honda Prelude...

What was the engine that honda used in the Acura NSX when that car was introduced originally used for?

Peryn 10-01-2003 04:35 PM

Depends on what you mean by 4 wheel steering. You mean Active 4ws only, or passive 4ws?

Didn't the prelude with 4ws start in 1988 or so? If so, there were cars before that with passive rear-steer.

Both engines displace 1994 cc. The STi has Active Valve Control.

pocon1 10-02-2003 09:06 AM

Peacy, the American STI is 2.5 liters, 300 hp and 300lb/ft of torque. I do not know if everone else still get's the two liter. They must, because 2 liters is the max for WRC racing. They need to homologate a certain amount of models, and they wanted to eclipse the EVO in America with more horsepower. That is why we have the 2.5 liter engine.

Ahhhh... That explains... I tend to check www.subaru.co.uk for specifications... ;)

peacy 10-02-2003 10:12 AM

The first decent production 4WS car was the Honda Prelude in 1987.

Before 1987:
- Mercedes-Benz 170VL (cross-country military vehicle) in 1938
- Nissan Skyline (not GT-R) in 1985 had 4WS, but it steered the whole rear suspension mounting sub-frame

well, the 91 NSX had a 3.0L vtec engine codename C30A3. I'm not sure but i think it was the Acura Legend.

The NSX prototype (1989) had a 3.0 V6 (w/o VTEC) and squeezed out 250 HP. This was unusually small compared to Ferrari's 3.4 V8 and Porsche's 3.6 flat-6.
Than the official release got VTEC and the power increased to 270 HP. This was also the first road car to use titanium con-rods.

I couldn't find any info about the prev usage of the engine...

Anybody???
