Female/Male Cars

Lately, when discussing cars, I hear people mumble something like, "Can't get that, it's a female car." I think associating gender with a car is ridiculous. Assocating color is fine...but the car.

I've heard it the most with the Jetta.

Comments?

FastShark85 09-20-2003 03:23 PM

Per a comment made on the Sopranos a season or two ago, the "Porsche with Panties".....the Boxster.

Time for the folks in Stutgartt to add some more ponies to these things.

VW Bug - Female car
Volvo-station wagons - Female cars

Dodge Ram 1500 - Man's Car
Ferrari Enzo - Man's Car

BulletBob 09-20-2003 06:32 PM

I could never drive a VW Bug

shakran 09-20-2003 06:47 PM

Anyone who bases their car-buying decision on the perceived target gender of the car is a moron. Period.

If it's a good car and does what you want it to do and you can afford it, then buy the damn thing.

G4ME 09-20-2003 07:24 PM

i generally think small compact, standard Civics, Neons, Lancars, jetta are chick cars. Does that mean i wouldn't buy one if the price was right? hells no, well maybe if it was pink.

You can't go wrong with a truck if you are a guy, unless it was that Aztec in that other thread.

bobw 09-20-2003 09:20 PM

New VW bug... FEMALE CAR. However the old convertables are great for beach-bums of either sex.....

Rodney 09-20-2003 10:28 PM

The Mazda Miata was and is very popular with women. I've read this, and the few people I've know who owned one were women, _and_ most of the Miatas I've seen on the road are driven by women. But that wouldn't stop me from buying one if I actually liked it.

A lot of the cars I'm seeing listed here as women's cars -- Volvos, Jettas, Civics, Neons -- are actually college student cars. I live in a college town, and there are hordes of these things around. What they are, mostly, is small and inexpensive and not very powerful (excepting the Volvo). So if you associate your manhood with large size and big horsepower, you might consider them girlie cars. But then I would question your judgement about what makes a man, a man.

EeOh1 09-20-2003 10:45 PM

Thanks for the input, guys. I wasn't worried about it personally, it just really bothers me hearing people say it.

Peryn 09-20-2003 11:22 PM

H1 = Total guys car. H2 = chick car

Just one example, but there are several cars you can pull up behind and know there is a woman driving it. Then they start driving and you know for sure :D

Disagree. I think it looks very feminine, and to be honest..kinda ugly.

soccerchamp76 09-21-2003 07:45 AM

I do agree, the Enzo is one ugly-ass car. Fast as hell, but as ugly

CrazySaturn 09-21-2003 08:23 AM

Actually, theres a Volvo station wagon around campus that looks bad as hell. It's a orange-gold T5 with a really subtle, factory equipped aero package. Beautiful car.

and on an unassociated note, if I see one more V6 mustang with a GT-R emblem from a skyline im gonna kill. I dont mind mixing and matching parts between cars, thats an old hotrodders thing really, but I hate mixing emblems.

mazak 09-21-2003 06:04 PM

I'm willing to bet that at least 90% of Enzo owners are men. Just think about it..... How many women would pay over $600,000 for a car? Not many. Just think of all the shoes and make-up they can buy with that amount of cash.

EeOh1 09-21-2003 07:44 PM

I don't think modern Mustanges are girl cars. Hmph.

merkerguitars 09-21-2003 10:24 PM

90% of cavaliers, sunfires, and saturns are definately chick cars.

Ashton 09-22-2003 01:30 AM

Hey now, some chicks like hot ground pounding horsepower too!...... I prefer to call them 'wussy' cars rather than 'chick' cars :D

Spyder_Venom 09-22-2003 09:38 AM

Dude, my girlfriend drive my firebird all the time... She is currently trying to get her Reginal SCCA Lic (with the car). Just goes to show - women love HP.

YEs the new ones are....but drop a big block in a Camaro its no longer a chick car:lol:

TM875 09-22-2003 05:09 PM

Chick cars are for the girls that would rather look "cute" than drive something practicle.

Typically the only cars I look at as girl cars are the Beetl, the Cabrio, and the H2 (soccer moms only). Civics and Jettas can go either way.

Just a side note - in highschool, my gym teacher had a red beetle. We all made fun of him for having such a feminine care (he's about 6'8 - huge scarey football player-type gym teacher). Well, to make it worse, the next year he got a rust colored Cabrio. Tell me he wasn't hiding something.

pocon1 09-22-2003 05:27 PM

Oftentimes, manufacturers don't go out of their way to design a car for one sex. Why would they cut out half of the market? But, sometimes groups perceive a car as "theirs". Look at Subarus. Subaru does advertise in gay mags and they have used Martina Navatrilova as a spokesperson. Many lesbians like Subarus because they are perceived as being a little aggresive and outdoorsy without being ecologically insensitive suv's. Of course, look how many guys like myself have bought the WRX.

David2000 09-22-2003 05:55 PM

I think that if you're making this decision you've got bigger problems than car envy--i.e. penis envy. Just get a good car that's safe and doesn't pollute too much and you're a big man in my book anyday.

What about Mini Van's?

Peryn 09-23-2003 09:19 AM

i wouldn't put minivans into teh chick car category. They are becoming more and more popular with the dads that deal with kids a lot. I See minivans as a parent's car....not a chick car. Especially since they almost all have 200hp these days, 240 on the honda. Very few chick, or moms, know how to use that much power.

LOL

I knew one that could handle that power.

But when I rebuild my Van(full-size). I hope to grab about 350 or maybe 400 HP out of my 350.

Any year Mitsubishi Eclipse, Total Girls car

EeOh1 09-23-2003 09:01 PM

I know a slew of guys who drive the Mitsu Spyder Eclipse. I don't see anything about this car distinctly feminine.

I'm going to have to disagree with you on that one, Remy.

preluder 10-01-2003 03:25 PM

at my school, pretty much only sorority girls drove eclipses, ya know, with those mardi gras beads on the rear view mirror and fuzzy steering wheel cover things. 2003 impala??? it's pretty neutral i think, but i've only seen guys driving it so far.

TheClarkster 10-01-2003 09:05 PM

Obviously the new bugs, but i've also heard MR2s being described as feminine.
As for volvo station wagons...
I had an '85 classic blue one, and it was completely awesome, not a chick's car at all, unless you're using it to haul around your kids to a soccer game or something....then the EverClear song "Volvo Driving Soccer Mom" comes to mind.

Jaseca 10-01-2003 09:23 PM

The common association here is Grand Am's are driven by girls. Usually bitchy girls...

And one of our male friends... but he's rather bitchy himself.

NO the Jetta is not a woman car..

I don't drive one but a guy at work has a older one and hes got it lower a little and it looks so sweet.

WarWagon 10-02-2003 12:46 PM

How about an 80 Malibu wagon in black primer, 12pt cage, single racing bucket, and no exhaust?

Atomic Pinkie 10-02-2003 07:48 PM

I have a damn Jetta, I am a guy. My thoughts? I get all the ladies looking at me when I drive through college towns *AND* I can talk cars with them.

:o

Yeah baby.

Atomic Pinkie 10-02-2003 07:50 PM

if you want to put gender

Ill challenge ANYONE on civics and trucks...those are the ONLY cars ANYONE drives out here and guess what, a LOT of females drive the trucks.

:o

Fidget.
