size matters

huge

Stare At The Sun 09-19-2003 06:58 AM

I've seen that about 100 times, and it STILL makes my mouth drop every time.

Peryn 09-19-2003 07:20 AM

Looks like they got mini UmpaLoompas to walk around in a normal engine. Always seems funny seeing people walk around in an engine....thats just not right....

Still cool though.

JBX 09-19-2003 07:37 AM

Holy Crap!

peacy 09-19-2003 07:59 AM

I want one for my car... :D

Elitegibson 09-19-2003 08:06 AM

Holy fuck, that thing blows me away. Are you sure that japanese people aren't just really small and that's a normal engine?

Scorps 09-19-2003 09:29 AM

I wonder what they use that for?

P.S. Im to lazy to read

CrazySaturn 09-19-2003 01:22 PM

Boats.

Peryn 09-19-2003 03:03 PM

pfft, 3' bore. Puny. Wait...my engine isn't even that long... guess its slightly larger than puny. :D

JStrider 09-19-2003 04:21 PM

damn... just damn thats frickin huge...

bundy 09-19-2003 04:56 PM

thats absolutely insane!!

i´m going out right now buy it so i can rice up my super-freighter.

merkerguitars 09-22-2003 07:30 AM

Holy Fucking Shit.....Now that is an engineering marvel....imagine doing an oil change...imagine the damn starter on the sucker...

that's the only explanation i can think of.

rockogre 09-22-2003 11:21 AM

Hmmmmm, some headers, maybe nitrous, a stroker kit.

I can just imagine vehicles racing with this engine.

The first annual container ship drags.

CrazySaturn 09-22-2003 11:54 AM

Haha, screw headers. Imagine a CAI!

Pragma 09-22-2003 03:29 PM

Drop a turbo and some nitrous in it and you've got one hell of a drag ship.

Those pics are just fucking insane.

When you need an engine that size, I think they're called "ships".

JusticeForPhat 09-23-2003 06:22 PM

i remember watching video of the Hyundai maching the crankshft journals for one of their super diesel engines. Eaching chip that came off weighed about 15 pounds and made a huge "clank" when it hit the ground. They were taking off about half an inch of steel with each pass.

And my boss shits on me when I take .050" in a pass.

Snoogans 09-23-2003 09:08 PM

that is easily one of the coolest things I've ever seen.

Cynthetiq 09-24-2003 07:05 AM

nice post.... most of the comments here are 20x more info than just the link you provided.

Please refrain from just posting links without any information in the subject or body of the post.

preluder 10-02-2003 07:08 PM

i wonder what sort of mileage those things get. 1 mpg?

Moonduck 10-02-2003 09:43 PM

I just... Wow.

Coolest link on this board ever.

Nuff said.

huge man

thadon 10-09-2003 08:42 AM

I saw that chit on the Discovery Channel ... that engine has to be built in the boat, wicked stuff

DEI37 10-09-2003 06:48 PM

Somebody mentioned turbocharging it. It's already been done. It's a triple turbo (IIRC) to begin with. Just imagine the size of those turbo's!

m5man 10-09-2003 08:36 PM

Who the HELL gets to torque those head stud nuts? My torque wrench can't even think that high. Makes torqueing a BMW head look like child's play.

johan 10-10-2003 01:06 AM

what is there to see. i can`t see jackshit

Moreland 10-11-2003 02:01 PM

same here :(

G5_Todd 10-14-2003 08:08 AM

damn

hahaha 10-14-2003 04:02 PM

Man, thats freaking huge. I wonder what would happen if it over-revved.

etardedraverboy 10-14-2003 07:34 PM

thats cool

wakelagger 10-16-2003 12:58 PM

On TLC, they said that cruise ships get about 6 inches to the gallon...

debaser 10-16-2003 04:03 PM

The casting on that crankcase boggles the mind...

thumper69 10-16-2003 04:46 PM

Krazy. Whats the mpg on that thing?

soccerchamp76 10-16-2003 05:40 PM

With the engine that big, it isn't miles per gallon, it becomes gallons per mile.

majik_6 10-31-2003 09:47 PM

That's absolutely one of the most amazing things I've ever seen.

What do you think it'd take to wedge one into my mini-truck? :)

(before anyone thinks I've gone off the deep-end, I'm only joking!)

Sunrise 11-01-2003 01:30 AM

That's just INSANE!!!
The cost to run those ships must be insane too.

If they got that much out of it, they wouldn't be going anywhere. The thing gets around 8 gallons per inch it moves.

Judging by the fact that it's tri-turbo, I'm going to guess that it's two-stroke diesel, making it even more insane.

acpower 11-02-2003 12:02 AM

<50% thermal efficiency!! wow.... and the size of that thing...... good lord.. wonder how it sounds when it starts and idles
