My Project 1984 Mustang GT

This is my project car I bought for $200. Thought I would share it with you all.
Here it is....sitting in the woods for 5 years....stinks really really bad....engine seized...missing parts...two bald tire.....rust....ick

Here is the inside....Theres where most of the engine parts are......not to bad of shape

Now the passenger side.....you name it it was probabaly in the back seat...including 4 rats nests.

The backside.....now that says wash me.

Kinda missing a few engine parts....and was stripped of most of the AC stuff and no more smog stuff....the pump is still there but doesn't pump anything and the two catalytic convertors will be replace by dual glasspacks with headers

here is the floorboards..only a few dime size holes which easily where patchable...pretty good for a 19 year old wisconsin car.[IMG]

nice older tbird rims with almost new tires.....damn factory alloys where a goofy 390mm trx rim....$207...screw that...

Nice. A V8 stickshift fox body is an excellent starting point. My cousin is running a 347 stroker with GT40X heads and a tiny hydraulic roller cam. So far he has made 13.1s, should go 12.7s tonight, we made some timing changes and he gained 50hp on the dyno.

Nice project. It's good to see people building American V8 cars rather than rice rockets. If you can count the number of cylinders on one hand....it is NOT a race car.

I'm trying to work out a 5-speed swap for my Dart (sorry, I'm mostly a Mopar guy but I like all Iron ).....but I don't have the cash. There was a '83 GT 5.0/5speed in a yard near me but the tranny was LONG gone. With an adaptor plate those can fit just about anything...

Wow...thats in...terrible shape. Lol, hope ya got lots of time and money on your hands. I picked up an '82 280zx a while back for 500 bucks. it was running... but barely. Was in much better shape than that, but with my plans gonna end up replacing everything. Decided it was worth it to part out the old one and buy one in better shape to begin with.

Personally, i dont liike that body style. Though a lot of people love em. I wish you the best of luck and cant wait to see pictures of it as it progresses.

If nothing else, you could part it out on e-bay and make the 200$ back probably

Well what I don't have pics of is the latter engine work I have done.....New solenoid, Edelbrock intake and carb.....I only have two rust holes in the fender and fix a door a little....Definately fixable. Yeah its a good project. Parts are easy to find and are cheap.

"This is my project car I bought for $200."

you shoulda made him PAY you $200 to take it.

LOL j/k.

yeah, you gots LOTS of work in front of you, but your project is only as limited as your imagination and bank account.

with enough time, effort and $$, you could make that a 10 second show/race car.

have fun.

Best thing about 5.0 Mustangs is how cheap and easy they are to hop up. It's a rock solid platform and dirt cheap.

You do have a bit of work ahead of you though....

big_bubba, so you're telling me the Lotus Elise isn't a race car? :P

Anyways, beautiful car! I love the pace car nose body style for some reason.
As for the plans, what do you want for engine/transmission? Making it an auto-xer or drag?

i think that you should lift the engine out man, i am a clean freak, i love making things look immaculate, if it were me , i would lift the engine, clean everything, peaint the inside and firewall and take off the components (i.e belt tensioner and stuff)

and remove the rust... the car would look so much nicer if you jsut did that, its a shame to see such a nice intake and air filter on such a dirty rusted everything else. heh

looks nice though

keep us posted on how it goes

Pretty phat man, I was working at the auto auction the other night and there was an '86 5.0HO there with stick. That thing hauled ass, I dunno if it was modded, but it was faster than the '96 LT1 firebird that was there too, and those birds are FAST. Sweet ride once you put a little work into it. I had a buddy that took an '89 Fox body stang and threw a carbed 351W in it with a 3 stage shot of nitrous. I think the last stage was something huge, in the couple hundred horsepower range. He called it "all bottle no throttle" haha

yeah thats a hell of a project car you got goin there. So cheap with so much potential. You can do a lot with that. Go as far to mod the christ out of the suspension and make it an Auto-x car if you want. I've seen it done, it works out pretty well but its a lot of work.

A 200 dollar project car is a great way to start. I would have but I wanted a car with character so I had to pay a little more. Thats a little better condition than the $200 project car Im looking at starting. The mustangs are good cars and the stick shift makes them fun to drive anywhere.

Well this week I'm gonna hopefully buy a AC and smog pump eliminator....The smog pump was locked up when I got the car and the AC clutch isn't spinning as slow as it used to which makes the car knock like hell when I rev it up. After that it's time to redo the exhaust (headers and glasspacks) The engine compartment will be spotless once i'm finished...i'm gonna get aluminum pulleys...repaint the interior....cut all wiring that i definately do not need and polish the valve covers. The car needs alot of little items which will take some time but will be worth the wait

Oh hell yeah it runs....in about 70F weather you just pump the gas three times and bump the key and it runs....I can get it to idle at about 650rpm..I have it set at about 1000rpm just so its easy for me to take off with the clutch easier.

wow, for 10days time i am dully impressed. Now that it runs and all, any idea what kind of condition the engine is actually in? Any plans to replace it / rebuild it / take it apart and clean the hell outta it? Even with some new manifold and all, gaskets and seals and who knows what else could be wrong with a 20yr old engine.

Anyway, very nice job and quick too. Make sure to keep us updated with pics

Actuall I took me about a month to get as far as I was. It was running withing a week of getting it. I had to unseize the engine and get a bunch of misc parts. This Winter I'll probably rebuild it. My friend just sold me a bare 302 block for $50 that will be perfect. This will get me buy until the winter easily.

Well today I just bought some headers and next week I will be buying some glasspacks and a transmission crossmember conversion so I can install duel exhaust. Also I removed the smog pump and ordered a pulley to replace it. So no more smog equipment. I'll post pics tomorrow.

The funny thing is that a year ago, I would've called that a lost cause, now it looks like fun. I looked at each part and started seeing it like one of thos Mastercard commercials, but with time and money for each. Have fun, and I hope you're planning a crate engine or some serious power mods.
