Car Alarms????
Ok.. here's my car... wooo
Isn't it purdy? Anywho.. someone decided to try to take off the lock on my passenger side door.. so the lock is VERY fucked up. I am not too happy about it.. but at least they didn't steal my car. SO.. I feel I should get myself a car alarm and wanted to know what types are out there and if anyone recommends certain types.. or even how much I might be looking at spending. Just looking for some advice.. so PLEASE share . I don't want to risk my car getting stolen... Thanks!

Take a look at the new line by Prestige. TONS of features and channels, good remote with screen, temp reading, pager, vibrate, etc etc, plus a backup remote, and they can be had for under $200 bucks. We just started using them at the shop and everybody loves them.

Car alarms are ignored by everyone.....think about it...when you hear one do you actually look to see what is going on, or do you think " I wish that Damn alarm would turn off !! "

A car alarm's only use is to make you feel better, and earn money for those that sell them.
When was the last time you heard one, and ran to check it out? Car alarms work based on the assumption that when the car screams, the thief will run off, becase someone is looking at him. Supposedly, attention, drawn by the noise, will tell the thief his time is running out. Please, give me a break. If the alarm makes you feel better, it earned it's money. If the alarm has nice features: autostart, pop your trunk, roll your windows down, etc. then it wasn't a complete waste of money. Alpine makes nice alarms. Python is decent. Insure your car, lock it. Park it under a light. That's all you can do. Any car thief will tell you the same. Everyone else is playing paranoia to sell you something.

here is a little story
George is sitting in Ultimtate Electronics waiting for the sales guy to be done with the other customer so he can get his new sub. George overhears man go "Yeah, they took everything out of my car. I have a corvette with a viper system. The parking lot has it all on video. They plugged something in and it disabled the alarm for 30 seconds, long enough for the car thiefs to enter the car without triggering the alarm and do their thing." Big names does not always mean better people. Alpine, Python, those are alarms you see EVERYWHERE, makes you wonder if someone hasn't thought HMMMM everyone has these, might as well take advantage of that.

if you don't want it stolen don't buy it and leave it in your car. sounds silly but that's the only real truth out there.
alarms are annoying... and if you did hear yours and you got outside? he runs faster scared than you do mad... or you not only get your shit stolen but the crap kicked outta you as well.

Anyway you get what you pay for. I run a switch on every point of entry for my vehicle, backed up by a starter kill, and a perimeter sensor. I run leds and any other deterrents I can think of. Yes it makes me feel better, and my insurence people like it a lot. Some people do still look when one goes off.

I just had my Viper 791XV installed. Sure its $600 installed, but it has two way communication with confirmation (i.e. when I hit the unlock button, the remote chirps or vibrates to confirm that the doors have unlocked), has a remote start, and has a range of up to a quarter mile. It can also interface with Viper's GPS tracking system, allowing me to know exactly where my car is in real time. It also gets me a decent discount on car insurance. Viper also will cover $2,500 of damage to the car if stolen, whether it is recovered or not.
