Behavior when cops are around

So there I was, Mr.Law-Abiding-Citizen, driving exactly by the speed limit when all of a sudden, I spotted a cop behind my mirrors. I was wearing my seat belt, I was driving the speed limit, I was sober, everything should have fine, yet- as the cop trailed behind me, I found myself unable to make a lane change, and I ended up driving around in the same lane until he left. Do you guys find yourselves getting way too uncomfortable around cops? They scare the hell out of me, probably because if I get another ticket, I won't be eligible for a driver's ed course to clear my record until another year. How do you guys deal with the problem?

Moonduck 07-30-2003 01:40 PM

Easy, I obey the traffic laws. It sounds simple-minded, but it works. I used to speed a bit, okay, a lot. Got a bunch of tickets to show for it. I would get right nervous when a cop came up behind me. Since I decided to obey traffic laws, they don't bug me anymore.

Boring, yup. *shrug*

chavos 07-30-2003 01:41 PM

depends...i speed 5-10 over a lot, and so my pulse usually soars when i see 'em. But if i have been law abiding, and they want to tail me, i'll drag them all over the city at 20 mph.

guy2003 07-30-2003 02:00 PM

Cops make me extreamly nervous. I'll like slow to grany speed if I see them. It doesn't help that my girlfriends dad is a cop either.

marshall26 07-30-2003 02:55 PM

I'm comfortable with going 5 over the limit around a cop, but other than that i keep it pretty low key.

irseg 07-30-2003 03:04 PM

If I'm going 5-10 over and see a cop I don't slow down. If I was a cop and I saw someone freak out, stay in one lane no matter what and suddenly drive at/under the speed limit, I'd figure they have a good reason to be scared of me so I'd keep a close eye on them.

happy_joy 07-30-2003 04:12 PM

I get nervous like that when ever a cop is behind me. If he is sitting i dont care most of the time.

0001 07-30-2003 04:26 PM

You're fine until the lights come on...

mrsteve 07-30-2003 07:31 PM

i hate driving according to other peoples rules and i have a huge problem with authority, ive gotten a ticket for 58 ina 35 and it sucked but i take responsibility for everything i do, i speed and i know it can get me in trouble, but its not that hard to talk your way out of a ticket, at least not in my area

MSD 07-30-2003 07:42 PM

Cops tailgate me and give me dirty looks if I'm going under 85. Could just be me.

Z0RR0 07-30-2003 09:06 PM

Cops behind me? Not nervous, but pissed off. I usually park and let the pig get off my back.

Atomic Pinkie 07-31-2003 01:17 AM

I get nervous, anxious is the word.

In my town where I grew up, they used to pull over teens and make up excuses on why they did so, more quota points. :(

I hate cops, now that im out in Arizona, i hate em even more. They let you go 50 over during the day, 50 at night in packs, but if you go 50 solo, they hound you for it. Sometimes they do, other times they don't.

They are very selective.

tfpfreak 07-31-2003 06:01 AM

I hate em, but I know that there are some legit cops out there though!

soccerchamp76 07-31-2003 09:15 AM

I hate when the cop behind you is tailing you and you don't know if he is trying to check your plates, or catch you speeding without a radar gun trap; or he just wants to go home and has this guy going 25mph on a 30mph zone ahead of him.

Peryn 07-31-2003 09:27 AM

Ehh.....i pretty much stay what im doing if its only 5-10 over. Also has to do with how fast hes coming up on me. i practically spend more time in the rearview lookin for those headlights than i do looking forward. Which is ok, cause then i got a good idea of what is going on around me.

If they are flying up on me, i wont even slow down. they got more important people to catch going that fast than me. they always fly on by. If hes coming up on me kinda slow, or is real close behind me, i will drop to about 5 over, maybe even the limit, depending on traffic. If he's in fron of me, and going slow, i have no worries about passin him. I will do it slowly, but i dont mind passin a cop if hes going kinda slow.

Most of the time, on the highways anyway, dont worry about the limit. it gets pretty messy on them here, so its always crowded. just go with the flow of traffic (even up to 20 mph average over sometimes) and you'll be fine.

dac71 07-31-2003 11:08 AM

you know they are just following u to piss you off and slow you down. Just pull over let them pass then u can speed up

Moonduck 07-31-2003 12:54 PM

Hate 'em? Why? It's a fucked up job. I've had friends that were cops, and it's a shite job that isn't worth what they get paid. If it weren't for the cops, jack-offs that like to break rules would be causing the death-rate to skyrocket on the roads.

It ain't worth hate.

32v4c 07-31-2003 01:16 PM

I go back and forth - I live in ne ohio, near some GREAT roads, and I'll tear through um at ridiculous speeds - I know them by heart and theres little place for cops to hide...

but when I'm on the freeway I feel nervous getting up to 70 --- as fast as I'll take some s-turns in the valley...

Sometimes I'm amazed how nonchalant I will be when there is one around on a regular street - I should have a lot more points than I do.

Stare At The Sun 07-31-2003 01:18 PM

*Ahem* Fuck tha police Comin straight from the underground :D

I dunno, i have a Passport radar detector, so i usually have fair warning on pigs, but if they tail me, i generally pull off the road and park somewhere and let them go on there mary way.

WarWagon 07-31-2003 02:22 PM

When I first brought out the wagon, I'd have cops follow my by the dozen, particularly at night, because, well, it looks like a racecar. Bullet mufflers, skinnies, M/T's in the back, cowl hood, black primer, etc etc. However, most of them seem to lay off now because they recognize me and a bunch of the regulars who go on the nicer, cooler nights, and they know we're not stupid enough to do anything around them.

One thing to NEVER do is to be on the brake as you pass a cop. You're just asking for trouble, because they know you're speeding. Yes, I do some solo runs on particular streets around the industrial access roads because I can't make a 2 hour drive to Etown after every little adjustment, but I don't really worry, because I know where they patrol, and I obey the rules/speed limit most of the time, though I'm not afraid to go 10 or less over the limit.

bodypainter 07-31-2003 03:47 PM

25 years ago if I was in my car I had weed in the car with me. Cop cars made me very nervous.

Now that's never true but I still get that lump and adrenaline rush when I see them. Sucks.

Happyland 07-31-2003 06:06 PM

cops don't really have that effect on me; however I have been arrested before. There was nothing I could have done about it so why worry.

Just don't pass the motherfuckers up.

otter 07-31-2003 08:55 PM

If you're not doing anything wrong, then you don't have anything to worry about. When a cop's behind you, keep within 5 of the limit and go about your business.

Slash 08-01-2003 02:48 AM

If you are doing everything as you should, you have nothing to worry about. I generaly speed up and let the cops pass me, because I want them to focus on the bad driver vs look into my rear.

Scrub0 08-01-2003 02:51 AM

I just keep the speed at 5 km/h or so over the limit when they're around. If they pass me though (usually), it's all good. I'm normally doing 15-20 km/h over the limit if there aren't many other cars around.

locdawg99 08-01-2003 10:33 AM

I also panick, I have no idea why. I turn the system down, I usually turn the hat around. I dunno, I just find I draw enough attention on my own I don't need a asshole cop making things worse.

thadon 08-01-2003 11:33 AM

man I hate cops ... I got a ticket for 86 in a 55 back in December adn the focking fine was $355. The cop nailed me w/ Lazer so I was screwed, no arguing out of it

123dsa 08-01-2003 03:36 PM

I like to drive the speed limit when a cop is behind me which usually gets them to pass me. I then follow them (usually going 10-15 mph over) until they turn off. KInda fun and I've never been pulled over in my life. :)

acpower 08-01-2003 03:42 PM

i know exactly what he's talking about.. i live in a city where cops are known to bust you for even kids not wearing helmets while riding bikes.. while driving around i feel like there is a cop around every corner and so i do my best to follow all the rules.. not that it's bad or anything

sadatx 08-02-2003 10:38 PM

I feel uncomfortable, but it's pointless since I don't remember ever getting pulled over after having a cop behind me for a while.

Whenever I get pulled over I'm usually just driving along and then without notice I see lights in my rearview mirror.

ctembreull 08-03-2003 01:38 PM

Unfortunately, more than a few cops out here in CA have a very nasty trick they'll use. They'll tailgate you mercilessly in an attempt to make you either a) speed up to a point where they can nail you or b) make you change lanes without signalling for a proper length of time. Most of the time, I'm a pretty law-abiding driver. I only speed if the flow of traffic demands it (see 101 north of SFO to Candlestick for a good example). But these cops have learned how to bait and antagonize people into breaking the law.

No, sir, I don't like it.

Pragma 08-03-2003 01:51 PM

I've got a friend who was going 30 in a 25 zone, late at night, when all of a sudden a car started tailgating him like a madman. So he decided he'd get the guy off his back and accelerated to 40. Going right past a community college with a crosswalk.

All of a sudden, red and blue lights flipped on and he got pulled over. Hello, ticket.

Some cops are real assholes about catching people, go after the drunks, the people who legitimately speed and drive unsafetly. Don't try to force people to break the law.

Thats exactly what it is like here, and it's pretty crappy if you ask me. They should be out trying to do their job rather than harassing kids. I just think it's stupid to get pulled over just because you are young... which has happened to a friend of mine.
