Ford Lightning concept

I really love this, but I hope the ugly yellow interior doesn't make it in the production vehicle.

The SVT Lightning concept was a surprise during Ford’s unveiling of the all-new 2004 F-150. Launching a 'Whole New Era of Built Ford Tough,' the new F-150 is an all-new full-size pickup architecture designed for more power, refinement and unprecedented driving dynamics capability. It is the star of Ford Motor Company’s biggest-ever wave of new-product introductions at the dawn of its Centennial year. The SVT F-150 Lightning concept features a six-speed manual transmission, independent rear suspension and a 500-horsepower supercharged V-8. It is a powerful combination aimed at extending SVT Lightning’s supremacy into the future.

Ehh..too bad its a truck =P Arent trucks for like hauling stuff?? whats with the sports car-trucks?? I think they're hideous..

drawerfixer 07-19-2003 02:01 PM

Are those slits in the third pic the exhausts?

tfin 07-19-2003 02:10 PM

That engie is beautiful. To bad it wil lnever lok anything like that. Oh yeah, and why don't they throw that in to a stang? Oh well it is ford, what do we expect.

Heh, they did, its called the cobra :p

Just messin' with ya. I dunno, I think I like the looks of the original Lightning better.

Drawerfixer: Not the exhaust. Might be heat extractors but I doubt it, likely just cosmetic. The truck has side exhaust outlets, just in front of the rear wheel well.

drawerfixer 07-19-2003 04:17 PM

Ah, I see it now. Thanks WW.

LaZy 07-20-2003 12:24 AM

looks good. except for the big bird interior.

Tech 07-20-2003 01:38 AM

yeah it's sweet... i want to see how the Dodge Ram with the V-10 fairs against it... should be a nice rivalry :D

zfleebin 07-20-2003 03:41 AM

Deuce66: what you dont like the fact a truck can outrace you?
drawerfixer: looks like the air intake from a functional ram air hood

LaZy 07-20-2003 10:31 AM

uhh zlfee with regard to drawerfixers question....i think your looking at the wrong picture :) i was about to say what you just said when i posted. count the pictures again.

Quarter Mile? I suppose.

Track? Not a chance in hell =P No truck will EVER outmanuver a race-worthy car on a track.

Tech 07-20-2003 01:35 PM

the rear slits are to allow air to escape. you'll see stuff like it on aftermarket rice bumpers and on most exotics you will just find empty space, not even a slit.

without them, air carried under the car gets trapped in the rear bumber and creates a certain degree of drag, the slits allow that air to escape.

SweetVroom 07-20-2003 02:20 PM

This not only looks good but seems like it'll actually be fast too!

zfleebin 07-20-2003 04:03 PM

Deuce66: Thats a pretty big statement. You do realize this is not a racetruck but a sport truck right? The 03 is pushing 380hp stock and running in the twelves right off the lot. It will cost you less money to work up the suspension on it than it will to build up the power of 90% of the sports cars anywhere near its price range. and then when its done outracing you it will tow you home.

Mill 07-20-2003 04:28 PM

Didn't Car and Driver say that thing was going to pump out close to 500hp?

zfleebin 07-20-2003 05:07 PM

The 2004 probably will but the 2003 only pushes 380hp. The real fun will be when the srt10 comes out with 500 naturally aspirated ponies.

Deuce66 07-20-2003 05:57 PM

HP doesnt mean anything when you cant maneuver. My 318ti is about 180hp (not stock..N/A). It weighs around 1/2 what that truck weighs, with a perfect 50/50 weight balance.. Oh, its also 40 inches shorter, has more downforce, and less drag.

Like I said. I'd lose in the quarter mile, but thats not what I got my car for.

zfleebin 07-20-2003 07:44 PM

Deuce66: Look man I am not trying to flame you but you have made some comments against a whole breed of vehicles and I have trouble believing you have even driven one. Have you ever driven a Lightning? Do you think that your vehicle would outrun a lightning on the track? I am thinking I could probably take your car with my Hemi but well never know. How much does your car weigh?

Deuce66 07-20-2003 08:01 PM

I never said I dislike trucks. What I said is, I see no reason to race them..Its not what they're made for.

As for my car, its a 1998 BMW 318ti, with a few modifications (exhaust, intake, cpu, exhaust manifold). It weighs about 2800 pounds with a half-full tank of gas, and me in it. I looked up the specs on the lightning. It weighs 5000 pounds, its much longer, taller, and wider.

With 500hp, it would kill me on the 1/4 mile, but a truck just can not compete with a "sports car" on a race track, IMO. And If I had the 30k that the SVT lightning costs to spend on my 318, I'd destroy it, even 1/4 mile.

I love trucks for what they were built for, and I have used them for such, but I find the idea of tricking them out to race to be silly. Thats all.

Deuce66 07-20-2003 08:05 PM

Btw, maybe I'm nuts, but I really dig that interior =P

And I dont mean to come off like an asshole, if thats the car you want, thats cool, but I dont appreciate it when someone says a truck can out-race a regular car or sports car. =P

zfleebin 07-20-2003 08:21 PM

Alright I think its just come down to a matter of differing opinions. I respect your view and will not preach anymore because I dont have any races to reference to. Thank you for the debate and I am sorry if I offended you.

Are you serious?

I think it looks nice but it seems like they are making all these really boxy concept cars but they arent making it to the road.

Cynthetiq 07-21-2003 06:14 AM

:) it's a neat truck :)

drawerfixer 07-21-2003 11:19 AM

I think the outside looks grand. I like their truck 'Tonka' truck direction. The inside was fine, as long as a different color is available.

Another question for the mech smarties: Do those 'vents' right in front of the doors simply let out hot air, or is something hooked up to it?

phatman 07-22-2003 03:57 PM

with an independent rear suspension and the correct tweaking the older lightnings were great on the autocross tracks. Ive driven an older lightning and it was surprisingly nimble. Plus the ability to throttle oversteer is a big help.

Atomic Pinkie 07-22-2003 11:16 PM

heh, if you're tall(im 6'4" you get your head fucking pushed through the roof in that cab. I will never ever sit in one of those fucking things. I don't care HOW fast they are. You can go race other trucks.

07-23-2003 12:01 AM

sexy engine compartment

Sort of, they help draw air in and through the engine bay. This increases the clean air that gets in to the engine for combustion and helps to cool the engine as well.

NOTE: I don't know this for a fact as I have never seen this truck up close, that is just based on similar vents on other vehicles. I have vents in my engine lid that serve this purpose. My engine, however, is in the back of the car where fresh air can be a little hard to come by without some help. Somebody may know more than me on that subject.

cookiezzz 07-23-2003 10:23 AM

It looks like the bastard child of a Mustang GT that had sex with a ford truck. I don't know what to say. I'm not really into trucks though.

terpie 07-23-2003 10:52 AM

JS -- pretty cool looking car. When are they thinking about putting it into production?

Tickford 07-28-2003 10:31 PM

That looks killa.....

The.Lunatic 07-28-2003 10:34 PM

Fugly ++

i'm not down with those new trucks that look like they're a plasic tonka truck

Peryn 07-29-2003 09:24 AM

Forgot what it was called, i think there "SuperCooler" or something? Anway, basically refridgerates a tank of air, for a short increased power shot...sorta similar to nitrous, but dont hafta worry about buying more. I think thats in 04 or 05, and they use it when making their HP claims, so normal driving would be close to 50HP less i think. dont quote me on that, i dont have any of the number in front of me, just trying to go from memory.

Anyway, as far as the lightning goes, i think i prefer the Harley Davidson Edition. Basically same powerplant, but with extra cab room. Anyone know if they are gonna make Harley version of that concept?

FastShark85 07-29-2003 10:35 AM

It's nice to see a "ram air" hood that actually is used for something. I can't stand the Pontiacs and Mustangs that have the useless, fake hood slits.....they're like a girl who stuffs her bra with tissue....looks nice till it counts.

tinfoil 07-29-2003 11:49 AM

That's quite a nice truck actually. I would really seriously consider owning a truck if that was the one I could own.

castex 07-29-2003 12:15 PM

All the weight's at the front. A challenge, certainly, to drive fast, and a fun one:) Unfortunately, to go really fast it'll need a couple of bags of cement, or passengers, strapped down tight in the back.
I do like the wheels.

Moonduck 07-29-2003 07:16 PM

I rather dislike how it looks. Love that engine bay though. Too bad the bay will never hit production like that.

As to it not being able to handle, the Lightning has been turning remarkable times on the track for quite some time. Sure, physics is not your friend in a vehicle this large and with the weight distributed as it is, but don't knock it until you've tried it.
