So.... the VW van is coming back....
VW unveils new model of microbus loved by hippies - Yahoo! News I think it looks wicked, and I would be all over it if I wasn't so obsessed with getting an old beetle to restore or trick out.... I'm just curious if there's other VW lovers on here as well, I'm very much in love with anything VW puts out and if anyone has pictures of their vehicle as well, I'd love to look and drool... |
I've owned a few Vee Dubs. I wish this was my photo, but it's not...although my '72 Karmann Ghia was exactly like this one:
http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2.../coverpic2.jpg A weird one I owned was a 412 like this: http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ber-VW-412.jpg As you may know, since the engines in all early VW's were air-cooled there was no heat until the engine got pretty hot and even then marginal. So in the 412 they had the brilliant idea of using gasoline from the tank, igniting it in a flame which heated an airbox and allowed warm air to flow into the cabin even before you started the car! |
I would buy the new VW Microbus/Bulli in a cold minute. It's 100% electric, there's a ton of interior space, the thing has an iPad interface for stereo and HVAC, and it's beautifully modern looking.
Here's another article on it: Volkswagen Bulli Concept is a Microbus redux for Geneva — Autoblog Green I've got a Jetta right now I'm pretty happy with. |
Ummmm...
It's just a concept car. VW hasn't said they're making it. |
VAN looks great, but the new VW low-capacity diesel and petrol biturbo engines are not as efficient as the "VW bluemotion" PR proclaims it to be, and they are extremely lethargic motors, with a high risk of failure due to the biturbos. Given that VW do not offer maintenance or service plans as standard, their new "economical" engines are quite a let down, as the competition produce equally efficient engines at lower prices.
This van is likely to debut in bluemotion form prior to electric - which means that despite its brilliant design, its bound to be a failure. |

I love my TDI. My turbo kicks ass when I need it to and when I drive normally, I'm now getting a pretty stable 44 mpg. That's $.10 per mile at $4.099/gallon. It's got more torque than S's 370Z.
I know the Dub is working on these bluemotions and haven't heard much about them, but right now, diesel is where it's at for me. It's all I need and a bag of chips. |
