Anyone on TFP an off-roader?
 

If so, what type of vehicle do you drive?

I had a 1972 CJ-5 but recently sold it and bought a 95 wrangler. (the wrangler gets you from here to there a little easier) I am putting on a 3.5" BDS lift and getting some 33 MTRs for it.

I have a 2003 Jeep Wrangler Sport. I bought it because I have relatives that, yes believe it or not, live out in the sticks off of the paved roads. I almost got my 2001 Wrangler Sahara stuck up there one time after a huge rain, but managed to make it through. I go up there and drive through fields, and stuff, but I'm not a serious every weekend hobby off roader.

I'm a Jeep guy. I have a 1980 CJ7 with a lift and 36 inch Swampers. I'm in two Jeep only clubs. We go for rides 2-3 times a month.

ive got a ford explorer with 4wd... ive done some offroad stuff on the way to climbing gatherings... not much... i would definently like to find a place near lubbockl, TX that had some easy and fun off roading i could do....

I own a 2500 ram with a Hemi. Only problem is its 4x2 still it will do pretty well in dirt and sand I just avoid mud like the plague. The clearance isnt very nice but I didnt buy it to offroad either way.

I've had several 4x4's over the years. My first was a 1969 chev pickup with a 327, four speed - it was a bit of a beast to drive but looked cool.
My second was a diesel FJ40 - best 4x4 I've owned.

My third was a 1984 F250 with a 300ci six - no power.
My fourth was a 1990 F250 with a 460ci big block - loads of power.
My latest is a 2003 F350 turbo diesel - shitload of power.
I also have a 400CC quad that gets me almost anywhere I want to go.

I sure wish I had the FJ40 still.

I have a 1985 Toy 4x4 with 36" super swamper... need to get gears and lockers for it and probably new springs. Anyone here have any experience with All Pro Offroad leaf springs? I was looking at getting some of those, but I don't know if they are any good or not.

I have a 77 Bronco. It has a 89 5.0L Ford with the old three speed, 4.11 gears with a Dana 44 up front and a locking 9" in the rear. No power steering so I only have 33" on it. On the road it will spin the tires in the first two gears but only gets up to 80mph before she's screaming. It's great to take the top off in the summer.

I also had a 66 Land Rover Series 2A. Decent articulation and really low gearing. The old Land Rover is actually easier to drive off road except for in the mud. The Bronco has no articulation but has lots of power to hit the mud holes and spin up the last bit of hills.

Problem was these trucks were my only transportation. When you go offroad, eventually your going to break something. Espesially old trucks. It got too expansive to dish out money every few weeks for stuff.

I want to restore the Bronco but when you add up the special parts it takes, plus the goodies (Dana 60's, Atlas transfercase, NV4500, custom suspension) it's going to cost $30, 000.

The Land Rover is like a big mecano set. I could do everything in my garage. If I put my energy into one of these it wouldn't keep up with the big tire Jeeps though.

I got a 98 Wrangler with a 3.5inch lift and 33's that I get out whenever possible.

My dad has a 1949 willys jeep with a V8 in it..completly restored..nice for crawlin in the woods.. and i have an ATV and a snowmobile...its all fun

I had to get rid of it. Bulkhead and outriggers were rotted out. It needed new valve seals (a whole rebuild really), all new seals in the axles, new wiring harness, entire new braking system, ect. I wanted to do a whole restoration with a galvinised chassis but I lost my garage when I moved.

Land Rovers have no horsepower (stock), and are high maintance (some people like to always tinker). The Bronco has lots of power. Just have to watch the rust.

I drive a Volvo V70 XC (Cross-Country). If that's not off-road then I don't know what is!

I like to do some off roading when I'm down in the Carolina's -- about once a year -- Ford Explorer.

Had (still have but it's currently downchecked for various reasons) a '76 Jeep CJ-5. Straight 6, 3-spd manual, nothing special, but I don't get stuck in it, and it's great fun in the sand. I currently drive an '87 Trooper II. Crap for power, but it's got the right gearing, so it gets me around for work. As I have to visit the sticks on occassion, it does what it needs to. It's downchecked right now too due to a blown head that I'm halfway through replacing.

Story of my life to have old trucks downchecked for one reason or another. I think my life would be incomplete without some old clunker eating up what little spare time I have.

I got a 92 isuzu pickup that does really well offroad. 3 inch lift, 31's, manual hubs, 2.28 low range all stock.

offroading??? hell yes....this is my blazer, it sees LOTS of mud!

'87 Jeep cherokee laredo, 242 I6, 4x4.

Dont take it out too often, haven't replaced the suspension...ever. still, i haven't managed to get stuck yet. No matter what that thing keeps pulling. Something to be said for having close to 75% of your torque at idle :D

I take it out when i can, but not a whole lot of places around here worth going. Specially since i cant afford to challenge myself TOO much considering its age. still gives the younguns and their new jeeps a run for their money though. Besides, all else fails and i can drop into 4 wheel Low....haven't needed anything other than 4w high, ... but given what that does, i bet low could pull a friggin house down

Yeah, those are some good reasons to sell it! But, I think that even though the body style looks really old, it is so pimp lookin. And, you'd basically be the only one on the road with that car. It's rareness makes it an awesome ride.

66 Bronco...Dana 44 up front with disks, and hydraulic RAM steering, custom nine inch in the rear with Eldorado Calipers...all four corners sport 38.5 inch boggers. 8274's front and rear. Almost everything on it is custom, and home made.

75 Bronco (parts for 66, although no just a shell of it's former self)

79 Bronco. Custom cut into a flat bed with the power rear window mounted (and working) behind the two seats. She's the hauler for my 66.

84 bronco. POS inline six. Used to plow on the farm.

87 Wrangler. Another POS...but my wife has got a thing for flat fenders...she had me paint this 'plaid'...it came out nasty in my opinion, but she loves.

All broncos except the 84 have seen serious off-road and recovery duty.

Love my wheelin...especially love pulling out little jeeps and what not when they go in over their head :).

Any pics of the 66? How does the Dana 44 hold up to the big tires?

She's a 66 in title only really. It's a really a bronco sport xlt ranger lariat f350, if you want me to be accurate :) I have parts and badges from every one of those flavors of ford incorporated in. Even tried to build a rack and pinion steering system with parts from a volvo. Something is always in need of improvement. Labor of love really.

As for the 44 with the 38.5's. Before the ram steering I went through many tie rods, ball joints, axle shafts etc...In fact I still snap an axle shaft once in a while. I have a collection of about 30 (mine and some friends) splined ends sheared clean. Also the lincoln locker I used to run didn't help much. I should have mentioned that I have a full width rears under the truck (not narrowed for the old shoebox style). Sourcing replacement axle shafts isn't all that complicated from local bone yards.

I thought about placing dana 60's front and rear but damn...they'd be better in the 79. So heavy and really designed for hauling.

I like the half cab on your rig btw..I made one (sort of) from the full top off of the 75, by cutting it about one third of the way back on the glass portal. Came out ok.

Where do all of you guys usually go wheelin'?
