Car audio choices...

How's it going guys? Yeah, I'm back with some more help. I want to add a complete stereo system in my '67 Camaro. As of now, the cigarette lighter has shorted out which has also shorted out the AM radio too. I'm currently fixing that. I have about $450 (give or take a $50) and I'm not too sure what I can get for that amount of money.

If anyone can help, please keep in mind that to replace the AM radio, I must replace it with a dual-knob radio. I can add a CD player and so forth, but the radio must be dual knob. I've seen Corvettes and so forth with flush CD players but I really want the dual-knob for originality. I want the vehicle to look as original as possible, but have a speaker set that is top notch, understand? I possibly plan on putting a 10 CD changer and sub in the trunk. Not quite too sure on that though. I want to keep the audio equipment out of sight except for speakers, so I thought maybe hide a CD changer up on the roof of the trunk where you won't see it.

Any help?

I should note, as of now, I believe there is some kicker panels by the foot vents, but I can't verify if they work with the radio blown.

Hey, I have a 68 camaro with the original AM radio that Im replacing with a deck from probably Year One. The prices range from $189.00-$419.00. I might be adding a seperate amp or a sub later, so Im getting the cheapest one with pre outs that they have, its $289.00. That way I can add more later if I need to. They are the dual knob style so it will fit in the dash. They might not be the best available, I havn't been looking for very long, but it seems to be the best I have found sofar. Hope this helps.

My 68 Nova has a dual knob Kenwood in the dash in place of the stock AM radio too. It is small(only 25 watts a channel) but is loud enough to hear over my Flowmasters at 60mph. It is not anything special at all, just the deck powering two Kenwood 6x9s, but it serves me well. I don't need a lot of sound in my car, I'm there for the car anyway. But it is really nice to have some tunes for sitting in traffic. Have you checked with Custom Autosound? I believe they make stuff to go in every nook and cranny of the old cars, especially Camaros. Very high quality stuff too.

mouse has the realistic approach...you really can't get quality equipment for that price range.

CamaroRS1967 07-14-2003 02:40 PM

I know that it isn't a lot of money Atomic. This is really a filler. I say that because I want to get as much as I can for the price that suits me. If I find a good system and I do not have the money, I will buy what I can, and buy the rest at a much later date.

I have been contemplating, and I have decided to buy the speakers and such now and buy the equipment to play them later. I have found a good source for speakers and subs but I'm a little preconcious about buying audio equipment online without hearing it.

Does anybody own any quality speakers worth the money? Or maybe someone can help me find some.
I'm looking for some speakers with some good bass. I figure if I have a good speaker and great bass then I won't need to buy a sub to satisfy. I'd just pick up a amp and wire it.
Any thoughts?

Custom Autosound/Secret Audio. They have some OEM look alikes that should work no problem. I personally went for the blackout look in my 79 Firebird.

6x9s are not very expensive... you can get a quality pair for $150 out of crutchfield.

as far as a sub is concerned, i've always wondered... being an older car, and a classic... would all the bass vibrations shaking the car, would it start to loosen body panels and screws and such? i'd hate for my classic camaro (if i had one) to start rattling because of my music.

BigTruck1956 07-19-2003 01:27 AM

JC Whitney sells "classic" look alike radios for classic cars that are just disguised CD players and changers (like the ones mentioned above) bit pricey though (180-600 bucks)!

CamaroRS1967 07-19-2003 12:08 PM

Well, let me just show you what i'm looking at.

This is the deck.http://www.customautosound.com/prodList.php?FamID=8
(the ninth one down...the USA 5)

This is the CD Changer + the deck. http://www.indemandautoparts.com/usa-5pk.htm (why would they show a Mustang on the Camaro audio page?)

Not sure on an individual deck.

Now I could get the combo for $489 and have no speakers; or I could buy these speakers and have no audio equipment to play them with.

2 of these 10" subs (without a box) http://electronixwarehouse.com/car/s...cy/lw1076d.htm

and a pair of these pairs. http://www.sonicelectronix.com/itemit693.html

(sorry for all the links) This is why I am at a stand still. I think that I would rather buy the speakers and subs first (box and amp later) and the equipment later.
Any opinions?

WarWagon 07-19-2003 01:51 PM

Don't waste your time with those subs, total junk.

CamaroRS1967 07-19-2003 05:33 PM

WarWagon....What do you recommend for subs under $150?

WarWagon 07-20-2003 11:24 AM

In my opinion, you'd be much better off running a single 12 or 15 inch sub than two lesser quality 10 inch subs. I've used some legacy stuff before in a pinch (I planned on throwing them away when I was done) and it sounded absolutely horrible. May have looked nice, but sounded like it was in mud, and this was with a properly designed enclosure and proper dampening. For a KILLER budget 12 or 15 inch sub, take a look at the Shiva or Tempest from Adire Audio.

BigTruck1956 07-20-2003 02:17 PM

you could get the radio less the changer and some speakers, then add the changer and sub when you have more cash. Pretty much what i did--i had my CD player going thru 2 6" pioneers for about 4 months until i could get my sub!
just a thought. either way, when youre done, your ride will be bomb!

CamaroRS1967 07-20-2003 04:49 PM

You know, BigTruck....I never thought of that. I will probably end up doing that.
And thanks a lot, WarWagon. I have seen the reviews of Adire Audios' subs and I have decided to purchase one. (in the future)

Thanks everyone!

From what I've heard, its usually better to buy the electronics first (changer, deck) first rather than high quality speakers.
A lower quality or older deck will often output a clipped sound wave. This will damage high quality speakers because they will not be playing a smooth waveform.
So if it comes down to buying the equpiment now, and speakers later or vice versa, I'd recommend buying the equipment now, speakers later.
Audiophiles of the board, please clarify or contest my statement.
:)
