Mercedes SLR McLaren
This luxury supercar will have a supercharged V-8 producing over 600 horsepower and travel over 200 mph.
Let's see how the other car manufacturers react to this (BMW, etc.) |
0 to 60 in 3.9 seconds and a price tag of $750000.00:)

how can we drool with no pics?????
it's like talking about the nice babe that talked to you.. it's great and all but let's see some pics of the hottie... http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/large/1696-1.jpg http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/large/1696-2.jpg http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/large/1696-3.jpg |
Automatic, WTF?? What a waste.
|
Same reason they have autos in funny cars. With that much power, you want quick, clutchless shifts. With a locking converter, you can get a lot more out of an auto than you would out of a manual.
|
Auto tranny aside, that is simply a beautiful car.

that thing looks reallllly sweet
|
wow yeah i saw pics of this car over the summer and wondered just where I could get one Stateside
gorgeous, thanks |
Almost all of the high end exotic cars use some for of auto tranny. Be it paddle shift, or another form of sequential-shift tranny, most do a lot of it with no clutch/pedal from the driver. Makes for quicker more precise shifts and times.
I dont know that i like that styling so much though. The front is very sharp, edgy and aggressive, while the back end is much more smooth and flowing. I think the front half of that car looks kinda out of place on a luxory sports car. |
If it's sequential shift I have no problem, but an auto would spoil it a little, besides performance problems.
Anyways, sweet looking car. For the money I would take the (faster) S7 or CC8S though. |
damn... very nice lookin car... id drive it...
|
Eeh...not impressed.
For $750k, I want at least 1500hp and top speeds in the 230s. Come on, no sports car is worth that much with so little power. I'm stickin' with the SL55 for now, thanks. |
but can u add a sideskirts and a spoiler to it? :p, personally i think it looks a little odd, looks a little long(kinda like a funnycar/\) and the rims do it no justice(how bout sum 19in spinners :p)
but i'd still go for a skyline |
Umm, funny cars dont use automatics. They use a straight clutch made of several discs and steel floater plates.
|
You're right WarWagon. And, on top of that, they don't make 10,000+ hp. It's in the neighborhood of 5500-6000.
|
People always talk about these "super" cars.... granted they are very nice, look awsome etc. etc..... But think abou it this way, for a 10th of the cost you could have a car running circles around that thing at the track - but it may not get the looks.
Awsome car, just to f---ing expensive. |

I can top it,
Bugatti Veyron Quad Turbo W16 engine. In laymen terms, that's a four turbo 16 cylinder engine. 0-60 in 2.9 seconds top speed 252 All wheel drive. $1,000,000 dollars. I think those stats beat a McLaren F1, which Mercedes seems to have shamelessly included the name of in their exotic sportscar. (at least, i'm under that impression from the title of the thread) If you're gonna pay 750,000 for a car, might as well throw in another 250k for the best money can buy. I like the mercedes though, does it remind anyone else of a dodge viper? |
I like the side pic of it....so NICE!

Very sweet car though. |
eh. I think the various competition has this car beat. Veyron, F1, Murcielago, Zonda... etc etc etc.
I'd still drive it though :D |
If you are going to spend $750,000 dollars on a car, you might also be able to afford a souped-up Lingenfelter Corvette also for performance. Super cars are so expensive because they combine ultra-luxury, super-style, exotic-ness (average person miht ever see on in person, let alone once), and performance.
Sure you can spend $120,000 dollars on a LingenfelterCorvette and get a 0-60 time if 1.97 seconds, but you are still driving a car that most people see every day, or every other day. When you see this car, you go for a second look. Yes, the Bugatti can beat the SLR in performance, hell it has 2 more turbos and 8 more cylinders, doesn't take a genious to figure that one out. But the Mercedes has a lot more style, while the Bugatti is an ugly-ass car, albeit one of the, if not the, fastest cars in the world. In other words, I would take the Mercesdes SLR McLaren instead of a Bugatti. Owning the fastest car in the world would be nice, but this car can beat out 99.99% of the cars made, enough for me. |
The difference between driving this, a Murcielago, or anything similar comes down to feel, not ability. The limits on these cars are so far beyond the skills of 99% of the population that magazine numbers really don't matter. The personal excitement a car generates is made up of many more things than skid pad numbers and 0-60.

Long hood Short rear deck Goofy side intake Side exhaust Looks like... http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...9/fb1c7512.jpg The Ambiguously Gay Duo's car! Okay, a friend emailed me this comparison. I think it's funny. And for the record, I like the SLR. :) |
That is a nice car.
|
At that price may as well spring for an F1.
|
i think it looks vaguely like the Batmobile.
it´ll do. i love it. actually, i prefer it to the Veyron if we´re comparing to other super-expensive, super-cars. |
What really makes it a supercar. now that i think about it, thats rediculous. Just compare it to a much less expensive Sportcar.
Mercedes 0-60 ; 3.9 sec (someone else said, im just quoting) 03 Viper ; 3.9sec. Merceded top speed ; 200MPH Viper ; not positive but new ones around 180 i believe. Mercedes Power ; 600hp Viper, 500. So your paying TEN times as much money for the mercedes brand? Its not much more powerful than an 80k sportscar. Its got a little more power and slightly higher top end. for 10x that of a less prestigious car. Hennessey has shown that if he does the work and if he gives you a completed car (a big if) that the viper can easily be taken to match the power of that mercedes. I've heard people paying the price for luxory and quality build, but a $650k price tag is a bit steep. Even for mercedes this thing is way overpriced for its class. |
Peryn...don't forget exclusivity. In contrast to the SLR, Vipers are a dime a dozen. We've got four running around our little town of 11,000. I know of 6 more in the area twenty minutes south of us...some 50,000 people. Plus, the Viper looks like ass, and if you've ever really driven one...and I mean hard...they aren't a whole lot of fun. Especially at high speeds.

I thought that these went for $400,000 or $500,000
|
Sure the Vipers could be as fast the the SLR, but would it a) be as fun to drive b) be as prestigious c) looks as awesome d) be as luxurious? Answer is no.
Even with that, if you were to get a Mercedes tuner on this car you could probably crank out more HP and a faster 0-60 time. |
i totally agree that this car is about far more than performance numbers. You dont buy a high end car for the performance. While its there, you buy it for the image.
If i want a high performance car, i could get an enzo for cheaper than that. If i wanted luxory i could get a Bentley or Rolls-Royce for far less than that. Both of which are for more prestigious than a mercedes - supercar or not. If that base price IS accurate, it is incredibly high. Too high. You can get better performance, build quality, luxory and prestige for much less than this mercedes. |
The car is growing on me, and I have no doubt it will be amazing. Personally, I'd rather save money and spend $440000 on the Porsche Carrera GT. That's what it's all about. Full carbon body and chassis, 612hp V10, 0 to 100km/h in 3.5 seconds, 0 to 200kmh in under 9 seconds. Oh yeah.
I sell Porsche, I wonder if I can use my employee discount on that one? :) |
The Carrera GT is an awesome machine, and faster than the SLR.
But the style of the SLR is better hands down. I just wonder how fast the SLR would be with a V12 instead of a V8. How about a TT V12? Or one of the Bugatti, a quad-turbo W16? |
Uhh...soccerchamp...the Bugatti is a W-16, not a V12...although, either way, it's an impressive piece of work.
|
Whoops....lil mistake there, thanks for catching me there DEI37
But to illustrate the point even more, the SLR has over 600 horsepower with just a V8. If they were to drop a V12 in there, they could easily add another 100-200 more horsepower and drop the 0-60 by a couple tenths of a second. Mercedes-Benz + V8 + 600+ HP + luxury + side exhaust = awesome car |
Vipers can get that fast, but they have a tendancy to blow engine bits, catch fire, and spew oil when they do.
Here's the world's fastest pickup truck: http://www.bankspower.com/sidewinder.cfm It's street legal, a diesel, and does 222mph. |
