Building a Record-Breaking Kizashi ? Bonneville Suzuki Kizashi to go 203 mph - RoadandTrack.com

Every year in the middle of summer, a few hundred crazy people get together in one of the hottest places in the country to put themselves and their machines to the ultimate speed test. The event is called Speed Week, and this year Road & Track will be there looking to set a new world record with the Suzuki Kizashi. The car is no ordinary Kizashi, however; the entire car has been transformed into a high-speed machine, complete with a rebuilt engine equipped with a turbocharger. The turbocharger won’t go on until the car breaks the record for its class in the naturally-aspirated class, which is well over 100 mph. As for the turbocharged class, well, we’re talking a speed of more than 200 mph. Join us in this quest for speed as we present the build of the car and the actual attempt at the records themselves right here.

They gave the engine a set of forged pistons and con rods, a modified intake manifold, a custom exhaust, a Turbonetics turbocharger (running as much as 16 pounds of boost) and an intercooler to increase the horsepower from 185 to 583 — at the wheels. Putting all that power to the ground required beefing up the six-speed transmission and installing an ACT clutch.

The interior got a roll cage, racing seat and harness and an aluminum bulkhead. The car rolls on 15×7 steel wheels wrapped in Goodyear rubber. An air dam keeps the front end planted, and a parachute helps bring things to a stop.

Totally amazing! I'm surprised to see a Suzuki sedan join the ranks. I figured it would have been a different make like a Honda or even a Ford from this class of sedan.

Well, it did have 583 horsepower to aid it in its record-setting attempt.

Given enough fuel injection and modifications, I'm assuming it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility that a baby carriage could achieve the same thing (200 mph). That'd be sweet, too, but there must be safety regulations to be met there, I'm sure, even if it's an entirely automated, remote-control vehicle.

The salt flats, whether they're in Bonneville, Peru or in Malaysia, they just have some weird properties and feelings to them, once you're there. It's hard to explain it, but I just really like gathering there with friends and making a day of it.

Thanks, Cynth. I love Bonneville and land speed racing so I find all new achievements there interesting.
