Schumacher to race for Mercedes

So Michael's making a comeback with Mercedes Petronas! I was never a great fan when he raced for Ferrari, but it will definitely be interesting to see him on the track again. I wonder how he'll compare to the likes of Button, Hamilton, Vettel etc.

Should be good!

Quote:
After weeks of speculation Mercedes confirmed on Wednesday that Michael Schumacher will make a comeback to race for the team next season alongside fellow German Nico Rosberg.

Schumacher, who retired at the end of 2006, has signed a deal that will see him return to the Formula One grid at the age of 41, bidding to add to his record tally of 91 wins and seven world titles.

It follows a planned comeback earlier this year for Ferrari - the team with which he won his last five drivers’ championships - to replace the injured Felipe Massa. Those plans had to be abandoned because of a neck injury from a motorbike accident.

Now fully fit, Schumacher will revive his relationship with Mercedes, a company with whom he had close ties earlier in his career. The German carmaker recently purchased the 2009 title-winning Brawn GP team, retaining team principal Ross Brawn, who previously helped lead Schumacher to title glory at Benetton and Ferrari.

"Mercedes GP Petronas represents a new challenge for me both in a sporting and a personal context,” said Schumacher. “It is a new chapter in my racing career and I am really looking forward to working with my old friend Ross Brawn and my companions from my days with the Mercedes Junior Programme.

“I am convinced that together we will be involved in the fight for the Formula One World Championship next year and I am already looking forward to getting back onto the race track. For me, this partnership closes the circle. Mercedes supported me for so many years when I began my Formula One career and now I can hopefully give something back to the brand with the star."

Ross Brawn commented: "I am delighted that we can confirm today that Michael will make his much-anticipated return to Formula One next year and drive for our Mercedes GP Petronas team. As seven-time World Champion, Michael's outstanding record in Formula One speaks for itself and I am looking forward to working with him again.

“With the completion of our driver line-up, I believe that we now have the most exciting partnership in Formula One with Michael and Nico, who provide the perfect mix of talent, experience, speed and youth. We can now turn our full attention to the preparations for the new season and everyone at Mercedes GP Petronas is extremely excited about the challenge ahead.”

Button and Barrichello just testing out The GOATs new ride for 2010...this should be good. German revenge for Ron Dennis and his Mosley fetish outing. Don't McLaren have Volvo engines for 2010? I think Alonso may have made a mistake...the Ferrari is getting worse not better...lets see if he can wake up Maranello like Schumacher did.

If Schumacher waxes the Ferrari's asses in the Brawn Mercedes, I have to believe that will be motivation enough for the prancing horse to get its shit together.

McLaren and Volvo? Never heard of that before.

One would think so, but isn't Ferrari notorious for losing it when not under the control of very strong driver leadership? Has Montezemelo ever been responsible for Ferrari's F1 success? I don't think so.

One thing I'll say.Schumi wouldnt be coming back if he didnt think he could cut it.

Its an interesting move. Schumacher is many things, but a fool isnt one of them...if he thinks he's still good enough and the car is up to it, I think there's a good chance he'll be a real threat.

Lewis
Button
Alonso
Schumi

A pretty exciting season.

At this point there is no reason to doubt Schumachers abilities...his work ethic, racing pace and physical conditioning have always been the best in F1. If the Mercedes is as good as it was last year, than Schumacher should win plenty of races. I think McLaren is in for a long season -- they are getting at best, detuned Mercedes engines at worst highly detuned engines...bottom line is Schumacher is going to have a faster car I would imagine. I think the only guys with a chance of beating Schumacher are Alonso (maybe Massa) or Vettel, and Alonso is going to have his hands full as a first year Ferrari, but he is the real deal and if the car is fast he'll win plenty of races as well. I see it between Alonso, Vettel, Schumacher (possibly also Massa depending on the car, but I think Alonso is going to be a big distraction for Massa inside Ferrari.)

^ good comments powerclown

I wonder how well the Brawn chassis will be this year. It had a temporary advantage at the beginning of the season in 09 but soon everyone caught up. Brawn couldn't maintain their dominance after that, however they still did well.

On other thing, I'll miss Kimi Raikkonen this year.

As a lifelong Schumacher & Ferrari fan I am really happy to see him coming back, though I do wish it was with Ferrari, rather than Mercedes. But I think I can deal with rooting for Mercedes too, since for so many years Ferrari was the combination of Ross Brawn & Michael Schumacher.
