Old timers and history buffs ! 1958 Drags

Internet Archive: Free Download: Ingenuity in Action (Part II) From my cousin who was an old Amarillo drag racer in the day.... Here are some oldies you'll enjoy. The announcer gets a bit carried away, but a pretty good show overall. Videos follow Dode Martin & Jim Nelson to the Detroit Nationals, in '58. Some good shots. Jack Moss and his early side x side twin is in a couple of shots and shown being shut down by Rod Singer, the Top Eliminator. (Those blobs up front on each engine were Paxton blowers. He later found that those Chevies running at 7500 rpm needed more air than the Paxtons could pump, and were throttling the power. He soon changed to Roots type blowers. Watch the final shots of the T. E. trophy presentation and the long kiss with Trophy Queen, Glenanna Ham, who was/is an Amarillo friend of ours. She looks a bit dazed after getting a long kiss planted on her by Singer. (I was in love with her when I was 18, but neither she nor hubby, good friend Dale, knew it. ) xoxoxoo

Wonderful stuff, thanks bobby. I just watched Part 1 and now on to Part 2.
This brings back happy memories of being an 11 year old boy and first going to the local drag strips in 1960. Both Atco and Vargo opened that year. Still can't get it out of my blood...not that I even want to. |
