Texas Mile 2009 - NOW WITH PICTURES!!!
Any of you following or interested in these top speed runs? Comments, opinions, additions are welcomed.
Being a Supra owner, and since Supras won their class for the last three years, gives me more incentive to follow the action. Plus, being a motorhead for at least the last 50 years I've always wanted to be in the "200+ Club" ...obviously by officially driving over 200 mph. So besides the world famous Bonneville Salt Flats races, there are a few other top speed runs around the U.S. and the Texas Mile is one of them, and it happens to be going on starting today. It's a standing start one mile run and top speed through the traps wins in each class. Bonneville and some other venues, as you may know, have longer runs, even up to 5 miles, with a certain section timed for speed. Maxton Mile in North Carolina, the Miami Mile in Florida, Mojave Mile in Cali, one at an airfield in New England...there are a few of these other places that also have organized top speed runs. Here's some tidbits of the action as it started earlier today and posted by others on a car site I frequent, not my own comments: TX Mile Updates The event begins today and its already under way. SW is still in the pits, Lambos are warming up, and the temperature is pretty cool but with a very strong cross wind Btw "SW" is the owner/driver of the current world record Supra in this class. SW's record car SW getting ready to run, they are cleaning an oil down apparently a mustang spilled its guts out there. Chris Johnson lost his Carbon Hood @193mph in his SC300 video of CJ interview, runs, exploding hood: CJ is associated with Supra drag racing, has been extremely successful in that type of racing, and this Lexus SC300 now has the same turbocharged motor found in the latest generation Supras, the 2JZGTE motor. Lambo 203mph maiden Voyage for car and driver Above was a "UGR Car @ 15psi short shifting, John (Reed) said he is going to start turning them up in a bit. (John Reed is a world famous tuner) 243 for SW His record run from last year was just over 245 if I recall correctly. 217 for a local Ford GT yesterday, whipple + NOS VRAlexander & Tommy are there getting ready to run Both of these guys are prominent in the top speed Supra camp...Tommy as in T. Bahn. VR owns just about every fast car known to man. Tommy getting strapped in... John Reed: "SW's wife made some killer food yesterday" LOL Black Lambo went back out with 25psi of boost 220.9 226 for tommy in for the updates! GT's, Porsche's got nothing on SW...Nope they dont.. The biggest contender will be a 1500hp AWD Lambo.. Traction is what will start to pick up these trap speeds...Congrats to SW!!!! Gearing > Traction in any race that looks for MPH and not time, I think having an AWD there is more of a handicap than an advantage. Supras will be king of that event for a longgg time IMO. remember some of those TT Vipers or TT GT's can handle there own as well. Vipers can't overcome their aerodynamic problems, and TT GTs are still 20+MPH away from the record making 1500+HP The Lambo has great gearing as well with the 7speed.. Same as my M5 just my M5 doesnt make shit for HP.. LOL Also traction plays a HUGE ISSUE in the mile.. I have been doing it for 4 years with my bikes and have 27 World records.. We have resorted to tire warmers for the bikes to pick up 2-3 MPH.. any tire slippage costs you MPH.. The earlier you get into high gear the faster you will go.. People mistake that you can just roll off the line and not power shift etc and it wont matter cause its MPH not ET but its wrong.. The faster you can get into " HIGH GEAR " by putting together a good launch & Traction you will get more MPH.. Vipers once again have gearing issues just like the Vettes.. The Viper that used to run at maxon made well over 1500hp on E85 and only ran 232 cause the gearing.. He was plenty aerodynamic trust me.. i can not believe that supra's, as old as they are with only 6cyl and less then 4lt of engine and they are still running shit! Apples an oranges getting a sticky tire = Great, having AWD = Having to move more parts and harder to pick mile and hour, the proof is n the pudding. the black Lambo with the aftermarket gearing @25psi is well over 20mph beneath SW. Traction VIA sticky tires on cars will work great, AWD will alway take more than it can give on this particular race. Vipers have a TERRIBLE coeficient of drag (.41 to supras .31-32) to put it in perspective a dodge durango has .39. And no magiv splitters and lips will ever fix that, they have been out there geared for high speed in full race mode yet seem to hit a brick wall @220 217 For orange lambo UGR Viper aero is definitely worse that the Supras (especially since they also have a larger frontal area) but the GTS is supposed to be ~.35: Time check: this is updated as of 3 PM Friday Oct. 16 Last edited by BadNick; 10-20-2009 at 08:08 AM.. |

TT Gallardo just went 232
Ashik green Supra went 208 FYI there is also a gumpert apollo from arizona there, but i don't know if it ran or not today, curious if anyone who was there today knew what it ran i would like to know That is Evolution Motorsports' Apollo. They are the first US distributor of the Gumperts. Amit's car is out, lifted the head... It's been on the same setup for a while now, making repeated 1,300+ rwhp pulls on/off the tarmac...and it's been on stock size L19 head studs to boot... i believe sw is done.... Any news on Eddie Bello and his Porsche? Bello is not there. There is at least one biike that I know of that broke 250 already. Those guys have sacks of unobtanium...lol... SW's Supra is done due to cam issue. Kyle did 231mph in the Lambo. VRAlexander and Ross have been the only Supras to touch the track today but even that was just a roll race. Brian just completed his tech and is on the grid. He got his fuel issues worked out so this will be his first pass on his new 6567. So SW posted a best trap of 243mph, before his car failed, And that is currently the fastest speed overall? A bike did 251 earlier, that's the highest trap of the day so far. Second was another bike at 249. VRAlexander made a pass @ 224. Brian couldn't get a clean run. Still diagnosing an ignition break-up coming out of the hole. VR ran 224.9, almost 225....in his Supra His Porsche ran 213 GTR with HKS 570 kit did 180 Hennessey CTSV did 185 A couple 996TT's were in the 196-200 range Ricky's TT Viper did 228 as well... Bike went 253 Orange TT Gallardo 238 Last edited by BadNick; 10-20-2009 at 07:32 AM.. |

Went 208.19 mph in the VW today. Heading home now.
I just got a text that a yellow TT gallardo blew up bad, as in scattered parts all over the course, and was on fire burning up somewhere around the 3/4 mile mark. Driver appears to be ok. Damn...thats terrible news to hear. I hope the driver is ok! I actually love the pressure these TTG's are putting on the rest of the racers, since the Vipers cant Driver looks to be fine. Hoping pics come soon. I will quote John Reed in reference to the driver "he is perfectly fine and ready to build the record breaker" Heavy crosswind Friday and Saturday, a little warmer today but still a slight crosswind. Last march was a heavy tailwind and much much cooler weather so there's a difference right there. Both Amit and SW decided it wasn't worth trying to quick fix their cars and risk breaking completely, there's always next time. The Gallardo's were very impressive, a truck tumbled over a few times, a Porsche did a couple circles down the track and ended up in the grass, and a Mustang caught on fire at the end of the track, that about sums up the weekend. Oh and I'm as red as a lobster right now. HUGE props go to SW and his wife, and Justin and Zohair for supplying awesome food and grilling skills all weekend, they fed everybody that walked by it seemed. Another thread of comments by Chris Johnson, Performance Motorsports/ART, Austin, TX, and some nice pictures: My first pass at 24 psi netted a exploded Seibon hood and a time slip of 172 mph. My drift box said top speed of 183 mph. I let off after the hood went. Drove back to Austin and retrieved my stock hood. The second pass was better at 182 mph using 26 psi, but spun hard in second gear. The last pass I left the boost the same and concentrated on 2nd gear. Finally got my goal of 190 mph, 190.78. I figured I was making about 750-770 rwhp. The most exciting part of the Mile was a filming of a pilot show called "Back it Up". I got to line up with a 1100 rwhp Porsche for a 60 mph roll on. We were paced by a truck doing 60 mph, we then hit it at the 1/4 mile mark, and raced to the 3/4 mile marker. I won my first round. I ran 32-33 psi (825 rwhp) and brake boosted 17psi according to my logs. I got him by about 2 cars. My second round paired me with Ross Baird (900whp, NOS, and drag radials). Mind you, I used Bridgestone Potenza 050 for the whole weekend. I spun it real hard in the top of 3rd gear, but was no match for his traction and power. He got me by about 3 cars, good win Ross. I had a great time and would recommend the event for everyone, especially now as a driver Last edited by BadNick; 10-23-2009 at 10:35 AM.. |

second is still way excellent...it's actually in the top ten!
here's a nice little vid from the street car class winner Boost Logic Defends Title at the Texas Mile October 2009 Boost Logic made it out to the Texas Mile in Goliad, Texas this Past October where it defended it's title as the fastest car running 243mph. Look for them in the Spring of 2010 where they will atempt to break 250mph. The driver and owner S.W. of Elite Motorsports was happy to participate and we would like to congradulate S.W. for winning his roll race sessions as well in his Under Ground Racing Lamborghini Gallardo. A good time was had by all and as always it was great to see so many unique cars and particpants out at the event. See you all in the Spring! Last edited by BadNick; 10-23-2009 at 10:33 AM.. |
