what's the fastest car in the world?

It's a loaded question, since I think it depends on how you measure the speed and how much modification you're allowing and if one-off specials count in this tally. As you'll see, having a supportive community on your side also counts for a lot.

But since I have a black Supra, I vote for Supra Other opinons with supporting data are welcomed.

I can only assume you mean fasted overall not fastest production. The fastest production car is the Shelby SSC Areo. A porpose(shit I cant spell) built car that has no power stearing or breaks, but fastest overall car I have seen was a heavily modified Dodge Viper.

World Land Speed record is currently held by the Thrust SSC at 763MPH, averaged over two runs.

Other records could be fastest standing mile, fastest standing quarter mile, fastest recorded top speed of a non-thrusted vehicle, fastest production car, etc etc...I'll see how many others I can find.

I think twistedmosaic's answer is actually correct. Since I was biased with my question I forgot to consider rocket power.

special k,
I happened to look up the Shelby SSC Aero a week or two ago when I was discussing this question with friends in work. I think it does not reach even close to 240mph in the first mile vs. the Supra I posted does over 240 after just one mile. As far as I know, the most heavily modified Vipers ...other than "funny car" varieties... were at the Texas Mile and left loosing to the Supra. All the biggest Viper names in the country were there, it just wasn't their day. This March the Texas Mile is running again so all the big guns will be there to shoot down the Supra champs.

Well there has to be someone to call bullshit on something online, so I guess I will be him. Given that the video doesn't have any of the times posted, and there are lots of obvious plugs for the HHR wheels etc, you basically have to take the guy's word for it, so it saps some of the legitimacy of the video. The drag coefficient of a Supra is not where an SSC Aero is, and the Aero is pushing 1200 horsepower, so I say given the power to weight, and drag coefficient, no way the Supra beats the Aero. Assuming that the gear ratios are relatively similar (which you would expect given that they have to reach over 240) it seems like simple math to me. Same goes for the SSC car not getting to 240 before a mile. No reason that it wouldn't. Also the reports said that the Aero was spinning the wheels at over 190mph in 6th gear!

Healthy skepticism is a good thing.

The several Supras in that competition were all WAY over 1200hp...the actual number for the winning top speed Supra is over 1500whp. The official site of the Texas Mile, which is a well organized, fully sanctioned event with a long history and respect clearly shows the facts to support the above; not to mention that if you want to see several other vids of various runs in that event from inside the car or trackside, there are many more all over youtube. Since I frequent other forums where this was discussed in great detail from many perspectives, including comments from many other participants not just the Supra crowd, I am not basing my conclusions on just the above "HRE ad". Also, the Supra has a 6sp trans and the winning cars never shifted out of 5th gear so they still have another one to go if there was more distance in this race. Also, I specifically looked up what speed the Aero hits in one mile and it is just a tad over 220; reason I know that is I also looked up the Veyron which is just under that speed in the mile. As far as spinning wheels, most of the top ten could be spinning their wheels if that was desireable, but it's not.

I'm looking forward to the stepped up competition in the upcoming March '09 Texas Mile. The Supras will also be stepping up their game so it should be interesting.

Yes sir I have no doubt that there are supras that can beat vipers I was simply stating that the fasted car I had personally been in and seen first hand by being in was a heavily moded viper. I still stand behind the Aero as the fasted production car due to your own point that the supras were modified. The aero is not thus production.

I believe that the Gumpert Apollo is probably the end-all be-all of fast street legal vehicles. It doesn't have the top speed of a Veyron (or the rocket-propelled Thrust SSC), but it's probably the best car out there so far as all around performance.

Pick up an Apollo? It's about $400k, right? I don't even know if my house is worth that anymore.

I, erm, meant the magazine. Hopefully your house still has enough equity for that.

This is a valid point I can agree with. The Supras were all modified with large turbos and supporting hardware.

A buddy around here who used to own a Supra now has one of the nicest twin turbo Vipers I've ever seen, the detail work is "jewel-like"...he drag races it, I think his latest et in the 1/4 mi. was about 8 sec. at over 180mph, tranny is now a modified Powerglide, puts out probably over 1200whp (over 1400 bhp).

The Apollo looks like a pretty cool car. I'll check out the article since I know nothing about it. Anyway, my preference is for an all around sports cars rather than any straight line beast.

If someday I ever have hundreds of thousands of dollars to spend on a car, I'm happy I'll still have multiple choices.

Here's top gear testing the mid-range 700hp (as opposed to the top of the line 800hp model), and Spoiler: it is the fastest thing they've ever driven around their test track. And that's saying something.

Maybe we should qualify "fastest"...

Fastest speed of any production vehicle? Bugatti Veyron, 260 mph.
Fastest acceleration of any production vehicle? Veyron, 2.6 seconds.
Fastest not in a straight line of any production vehicle? Gumpert Apollo or maybe the Ascari A10.
Fastest to break down of any production vehicle? My 2005 Audi A6 Quattro. Stupid piece of junk.

I'm still tempted to stick with my current all time favorite car (to drive a lot, not counting collectibles), the McLaren F1, though it is not the fastest or quickest. I just want it the mostest.

damn, Will, I didn't know the Audi's were that bad. I kinda like the pepped up R8's but this gives me cause for pause.

I did a lot of research after my Audi, apparently my case was a fluke. Audis made after maybe 1993ish, especially those of the current generation, are quite reliable. And AWD is nothing to sneeze at.

Nick, do you know roughly what the drag coefficients are on those Supras? They never struck me as real wind cheaters, and even with crazy HP, you need to beat the wind, especially at top end. Even though the filming left something to be desired, it was clear that that black Supra looked faster than the other cars. Have to give some credit to the drivers too, a noob with 1500 HP would roast those tires like a christmas goose so it took a lot to get those times.

Sorry if I'm ranting a bit but being an owner of a Supra and appreciating first hand what a great car it is...then on top of everything else this Texas Mile achievement is really something outstanding.

I just tried to find the posts about comparing drag coefficients and I think this is reliable but the numbers aren't mine:

The Cd of the Supra is ~ 0.32; not sure what frontal area is but less than the Vipers.

The (Viper) GTS Coupe has a Cd of 0.35 and a frontal area of about 20.56 square feet or 1.91 square meters. This translates to about 11% more drag for the Viper (than the Supra)

One of the twin turbo Vipers who was a top contender blew one of his turbos after a couple runs, I think his best was like 220mph, so I'm sure he could have done better...looking forward to what he does this coming March '09 Texas Mile since competition is a good thing.

The guy who drove (and owns) that mile record breaking black Supra is SW and he's definitely not a noob, he's a very talented racecar driver; his 1/4 drag racing achievements are also at the very top of the best. He got over 229 in his Supra back in March '08 and has since stepped up his game with more power and refinements to be able to achieve this 241.8 mph at the October '08 Mile.

Here's an incar view from the 241.8 mph run:

The guy who's name is on the video above "VRAlexander" owns and drove one of the other Supras which runs two large turbos (SW's has one very large one) but it didn't take top honors, I think he was around 220mph. He also brought along his somewhat famous highly modified Porsche Carrera GT which I love, as well as his modified turbo Porsche 996TT which hit well over 210. When VR posted about going to this event, he mentioned some of his buddies who went and were there to run, so all kinds of very fast modified cars were at the various Texas Mile events, these are just a few from October:

..."So far I have the following confirmations for our group.
1) Me and Tommy with several Supras and a little silver 996tt
2) Eddie Bello 1300hp 964 turbo
3) Todd and the EVOMS gang -several cars
4) Bobby - 1200+hp 993turbo
5) Josh from Autograf- Twin Turbo ford GT 1200+hp
6) Tym Switzer with David's car - 996tt, he wants to push massive boost to see where the break point is, so he can build a new motor..lol..should be some fireworks!..."

Btw, another Supra from Texas (Tommy Bahn) won the Texas Mile top speed honors in a previous event but this year he broke...I didn't watch that first vid again but I think he snapped his driveshaft and he's the one under the car lending some of his parts to one of the other guys.

The Ariel Atom is quick and handles pretty damn good...when it's working...but I don't recall any statistics to confirm that it's the "fastest".

I've been on the track with Atoms and according to those two owners, they had to do a lot of modifications to even keep the damn thing running half decent for a few laps without breaking...exhaust headers constantly breaking, things melting...not all that well developed from the factory...maybe they eventually corrected it, I'm not sure. This was one from last August at NJMP:
