BMW M1 Homage
Could this be BMW's next great supercar? Don't bet on it.

By Mike Monticello

May 2008
First, the bad news — BMW says the striking concept shown at the recent Villa d'Este concours in Italy is not destined for production. But...when Adrian van Hooydonk, the head of design for BMW automobiles, said, "The BMW M1 Homage clearly manifests the creativity and potential of the BMW Design team," and later added that "a project such as this is a valuable source of inspiration for our day-to-day work," well, maybe there is hope for a BMW supercar down the road.

Regardless, the M1 Homage is just plain cool. The reason the car exists is to mark the 30th anniversary of the BMW M1, which to this day is still one of the most lust-worthy sports cars ever created. The original M1 was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, based on the BMW Turbo concept penned by Paul Bracq. The new M1 Homage comes straight from the BMW Group Design team.

Although we can dream about the M1 Homage becoming a production-car reality, the fact is it doesn't even have an interior and this "mid-engine concept" isn't a "runner" — it has to be pushed to move at all. Still, it looked stunning at Villa d'Este, positioned alongside the M1 and the BMW Turbo, painted in Liquid Orange in honor of the hallmark M1 colors of black and orange. The twin BMW logos on the rear of the M1 Homage are also in honor of those on the M1 production car, as are the air vents in the hood and the classic louvers on the back window. BMW says the M1 Homage's exterior dimensions "are in keeping with those of the M1; only the extended wheelbase indicates a larger passenger cell." Which, of course, we couldn't see, because there is no interior.

Other cool features of the M1 Homage include "invisible headlamps" and a squat version of the trademark BMW grille, the last which also serves as a way to route cool air to the engine. The headlamps truly are almost invisible, recessed into the design of the car's nose — until they are switched on, that is.

BMW officials left us with this thought: They said the BMW M1 Homage "is designed as a source of inspiration; it sets out to challenge us to question and rethink what we see around us." Hopefully they'll question why a company with a top-flight Formula 1 team doesn't have a true supercar.
What a wild concept....

I don't think I like it very much. I do like parts and pieces of it, but mostly I don't like it.

I don't see a single line or angle on that entire car that is even remotely appealing.

The_Jazz 05-16-2008 08:45 AM

It looks like they took the worst of the late-70's/early-80's Ferarri's and Lambourghini's and mixed the parts together with a gigantic amount of suck. Christ, the white one looks like a Fiero knock-off from that angle.

I'd hit it. With my Subaru.

The only angle I like to look at if from is the side profile shot. Outside of that, it looks like they took the front end off a new Mustang or Camaro, and changed the angles and headlight patterns. Everything other angle looks awful.

I like it and it is certainly much better than the older ones.

You guysssss, the white one is the original M1, and yes its body was indeed designed by Lamborghini (or some italian dude, I forget)

A bit OT but the engine used in the first M1 was also used in this beauty:

It looks like the car a Bond villain would drive.

ironman 05-16-2008 12:57 PM

Call me crazy, but I love the design, it's the wheels I'm not crazy about.

You're not far off. The original WAS used in a Roger Moore Bond film; and could even turn in to a submarine!

I remember a friend had a toy version of it.

I can't remember which movie though...

Lotus Esprit S1 The Spy Who Loved Me

The Esprit returned again in For Your Eyes Only.

German cars he drove were the BMW 5 Series, (Octopussy) Z3 (Golden Eye,) 750iL (Tomorrow Never Dies) and the Z8 (The World Is Not Enough).

Eh, they look pretty similar.

I'll take a 1999 M Coupe please...

You're crazy.

That is quite possibly the ugliest car I've ever seen. It's looks as if a very large man accidentally sat on the new Camaro.

allaboutmusic 05-17-2008 01:17 AM

I like it a lot.

Zweiblumen 05-17-2008 01:56 AM

I would have preferred that the M1 keept it's uniqeness as the only BMW with 2 logos on the rear and mid-engine.
