Can exterior car scratches be repaired? how?
Hello all,
While shovelling off the pile of snow from my car, I scratched my car. Now the exterior has many non-deep scratch lines all over. (So yeah, I learned the hard way: DO NOT ever use a shovel on a car). Is there any hope of repairing what has been done? Any help is greatly appreicated. |

If the scratches aren't too deep a good auto paint polish and some elbow grease should take them right out. My dog scratched the side of my black truck by jumping up on it and I buffed them out with Harley Davidson brand polish I bought for my bike. I can't see them at all now.

I agree with flstf. Depending on how deep it is, you should gauge how aggressive of an abrasive you use to polish it out. For minor surface scrapes like it sounds like you have, I use Meguire Deep Crystal System Polish and wipe it off with a microfiber cloth; if it's a little deeper, I'll use a random orbital buffer. If it's worse, you move into the claybar area where you can take out quite bad scratches. Maybe you should read up on the recommended techniques, lots of car forums have good info ...or Meguire's site has some instructions too http://www.meguiars.com/howtocenter/

The key is good auto polish. Look for one that has "cleaner" in it. Or, a good rubbing compound. Turtle wax has a pretty good one. Be careful not to rub to deeply with the rubbing compound though.
And...yeah...shoveling snow off of a car is decidedly not a good idea. At least if you care what the car looks like. They sell brushes for that. Just don't be the guy that lets the snow blow off on its' own, blinding yourself and everyone else in yjour path.

That's a good idea, Luke! But be careful how you handle the pick axe or it could be your last idea ...and we wouldn't that to happen, would we? |
