A friend's garage

I visited a friend this past weekend in Philly. He gave me a tour of this very incredible estate which included things like General Meade's desk and other memoribilia.

He had a surprise for me in the garage.

A 1935 Packard which has been sitting on blocks since the last registration in 1947. A 1938 (I think, someone else may be able to state what year it is from) Rolls Royce limousine which was owned by Rita Hayworth given to her by the Shah.

After I picked up my jaw after he opened the garage door. I went to the car go get my camera.

HOLY CRAP!!!!! That rocks!!! I'd love to have that in my garage!

Charlatan 12-11-2007 04:28 PM

I find that kind of sad... beauty like that shouldn't be locked away.

Redjake 12-11-2007 05:20 PM

I simply CANNOT BELIEVE how good condition the interiors are in.......that is just flat out incredible..........

I bet that would fetch in the hundreds of thousands of dollars......I hope he has them insured for that amount......

BadNick 12-11-2007 08:36 PM

Wow. That had to be a exciting tour. Not only are they great, rare cars, but the provenance of that Rolls relating it to Rita Hayward and the Shah is fantastic.

Is that estate accessible to the general public? If it's not confidential, where is it?

Craven Morehead 12-11-2007 09:02 PM

Incredible. I expected to see mildew all over the inside. The wood looks brand new. So do the leather seats. I'm surprised the tires are also holding air so well. I'm sure these cars would bring a huge amount as is but restored, wow, can't even imagine. Restoration would cost $10s of thousands, though. At least.

LoganSnake 12-11-2007 09:10 PM

How much are they worth anyway?

Fotzlid 12-11-2007 09:56 PM

if they were both fully restored, the Packard would probably be good for about $90k. the Rolls could get close to $200k if it could be proved Hayworth owned it.

I agree. It's cool that they're in such pristine condition, but it sucks that those cars will probably never touch asphalt ever again.

I'm sure they'd score some high points if he cleaned them up and put them on display at a concours show.

The_Jazz 12-12-2007 05:53 AM

I wonder what else is in that garage...

Why so much? Well, Rolls has the brand name going for it, but I've never heard of Packard.

Fotzlid 12-12-2007 07:15 AM

Packard was a major nameplate for luxury autos in the 30's and 40's. right up there with Rolls. like most other autos from that era, there arent that many left.

bobby 12-12-2007 07:37 AM

spend some money and get these treasures in top condition....!!!!

SHOULD. NOT. BE. LOCKED. AWAY.

Amazing cars.

Ilow 12-12-2007 08:22 AM

yeah, ditto on the feeling sad thing. If he's not going to restore them he should sell them to someone who will, they are only going to fall into further disrepair.

BadNick 12-12-2007 01:52 PM

I wouldn't be surprised if those cars in "as is" condition are worth more than fully restored versions.

Just from watching the latest Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance and other such classy car shows, the unrestored "all original everything" cars are getting as much or more attention than the perfectly restored cars. To many collectors it also seems there is a growing distaste for the overrestored.

Ashton 12-16-2007 05:51 PM

The Rolls seems to be a 1948 Silver Wraith

A nearly 100-year-old 1911 Oldsmobile Limited 7-Passenger Touring sold for $1.65 million at a recent auction in Hershey, Pa.

The old Olds was one of two vehicles to go for $1.65 million at the auction. The other was a 1929 Dusenberg Model J Double Cowl Phaeton, reportedly one of only three examples built.

The auction, run by RM Auctions, included a number of unrestored vehicles from the Swigart family-a collection that was started by W. Emmert Swigart in the late 1930s. The event marked this first time RM had conducted an auction at Hershey.

Nearly 120 cars were shown at the auction. Other interesting vehicles sold included:

A 1933 Stutz DV32 Dual Cowl Phateon with LeBaron coachwork. Sale price was $797,500.

A 1930 duPont Mode G Le Mans Speedster. It sold for $704,000.

A 1937 Bugatti Type 57C Ventoux coupe, which sold for $528,000.

those old cars are worth a lot.

the Olds was unrestored. only thing they put on it were new tires as the originals were still on the rims.

That 1935 Packard Twelve Convertible Sedan is in excellent shape, I found one that sold at auction for $181,500

Here's another restored 35 Packard Twelve

That was quite a garage find. It would sure be tough to put a price on a Rolls that once belonged to Rita Hayworth. The interior of the Pacard is perfect to me just the way it is.

Scorps 12-17-2007 12:24 PM

Those cars still run?

There is a local guy here that has a Ford Model T that he still drives to the car shows.

DEI37 12-17-2007 04:14 PM

I doubt they run, and that is sad. Having been parked for that long, significant work will likely be needed to ever hear those engines purr again.

Scorps 12-17-2007 07:19 PM

Well I know someone who found an old Plymouth satellite that had been stored for 25 years(I think he said 25). Its fired up with new gas and a little shot of quick start. but depends on how it was stored 2.

bobby 01-30-2011 06:26 PM

any news on this "barn" find.....update???
