Cameron originally envisioned the Terminator as a small, unremarkable man, giving it the ability to blend in more easily. As a result, his first choice for the part was Lance Henriksen. O. J. Simpson was on the shortlist but Cameron did not think that such a nice guy could be a ruthless killer. -From the Collector's Edition DVD of The Terminator |

Hey did any you notice that it wasn't the turbo that actually got red hot? It was the exhaust manifold ahead of the turbo and the line to the wastegate; the turbo exhaust housing never glowed red though I'm sure it was also damn hot. Does this suggests significant backpressure in the header? since if the line to the wastegate got that hot it must have been bleeding exhaust gas to keep the boost from getting too high. If all the exhaust was just blowing out of the exhaust manifold and into the turbo housing, I think the turbo housing would get hotter than this one did, and the wastegate line less so.
Also, this hot turbo stuff is related to why about three of the plastic clips that hold my hood liner to my hood melted, and the "fire resistant" hood liner got scorched right above my turbo at a recent track day. So I used a large aluminum serving tray that the cafeteria girl gave me and made it into a heat shield and that solved my problem so I wouldn't have to let up. |

'twas the headers that glowed, not the turbo, but it is still one of the most insane things I've ever seen........
Isn't that the same engine that was used in the Ford Falcon race car?

That's typically an indicator of too little timing, or an excessively rich condition, causing the unburnt fuel to ignite in the headers. There is NO WAY the header should be glowing like that under ideal/properly tuned conditions in that amount of time. The EGT's would have to be through the roof.

I love glowing exhaust!
Sometimes it means your timing is off and sometimes its because you are running too rich on your fuel mixture. but sometimes, as in these motors, and on my mustangs' motor its because you are revving the piss out of them! Happens to me all the time at the track. WOT at about 7000 rpm for several minutes at a time in a motor designed to redline at about 5500 rpm equals very hot exhaust.

You mean slightly lean. I could light a smoke off my manni after a good high PSI run on my 89 supra. Running A little rich cools the piston heads and helps stops detonaton. |

^ agreed. I like running mine a little rich at the track for such cooling purposes ...a crowd-pleasing effect of this is blowing flames out the exhaust when the unburned fuel is ignited by the exhaust heat. Lean is hot ...not good hot, bad hot.
