Not only that, but there is so much tension and rivalry between the McLaren drivers that this race really takes on an added dimension regardless of the WDC. The sub-plots and drama surrounding this season are unrivaled, I can't recall another F1 season with so much intrigue, for better or worse.

I'll be watching ChampCar at Surfers Paradise on ESPN Classic on Sat. night and F1 in Brazil on Sunday morning. Then nothing but football. What a great weekend.

I'm excited about this weekends race. I'm hoping Kimi can find a way to get the championship, but it would be sad if Alonso does take out Hamilton.

Friday morn update.....

The predictions of rain for the opening practice session of the Brazilian Grand Prix weekend proved correct as light rain fell throughout the 90 minute session. This limited track time for many of the front-runners with Kimi Raikkonen leaving it until the final ten minutes of the session before heading out and vaulting to the top of the timesheets ahead of Ferrari team-mate Felipe Massa.

Raikkonen set the pace on a 1:19.580s around the challenging 4.309km anti-clockwise circuit with Massa almost half a second down in the second F2007. McLaren Mercedes runners Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso also had limited running with the latter completing just an installation lap and not completing a timed lap.

Heikki Kovalainen was third fastest in his Renault while team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella completed a couple of installation laps but did not set a time. Nico Rosberg was fourth fastest in his Williams Toyota as he aims to put the disappointing Chinese Grand Prix weekend behind him as new team-mate Kazuki Nakajima gained plenty of track experience on his way to the 16th fastest time.

massa on pole.....

The battle for the Pole Position this afternoon in Brazil was a close affair with home-town hero Felipe Massa getting the job done in his Ferrari by just over a tenth of a second from his nearest rival.

Massa is the only one of the top four on the grid who is not a championship contender in this, the final race of the season, as he aims to repeat his win from last year. Critically for Massa and his hopes of victory, it is championship leader Lewis Hamilton who lines up alongside him on the front row of the grid and not team-mate Kimi Raikkonen who starts third.

Massa’s 1:11.931s lap was actually faster than any other lap in the qualifying session indicating that he is on a relatively light fuel load. The same can probably be said for Hamilton who pushed very hard on his final run to join the Brazilian on the front row.

Kimi Raikkonen’s final qualifying run saw him pass Hamilton who had just exited the pits. Perhaps a little distracted by the McLaren, the Finn ran wide and lost those critical fractions of a second. He has little to lose on the run into turn one tomorrow however... For Fernando Alonso, it was a disappointing session as he never had the pace to challenge for the pole position, but he still starts a competitive fourth as he chases his third straight title.

What a race! I missed what dropped Hamilton back, the satellite signal went away, and by the time I figured out that snow had built up on my dish and I got it cleared up I already missed it. But what drama! Kimi did a great job of getting by Hamilton on the start, and on his pit in and out laps to get by Massa cleanly. I have to admit I'm thrilled for Kimi as close as he has come in the past. Hamilton will certainly learn from this and be a threat for the championship for years to come.

We'd probably only come second in a "worst country at sport" contest.

Its not over, BMW and Williams were found to have fuel that was too cool. This would be a HUGE turn. It could move Hamilton up enough in the finishing order to give him the WDC.

i was scared for kimi for afew minutes, here are the results of that investigation :

Kimi Raikkonen has been confirmed as world champion following an stewards enquiry into the BMW and Williams teams at the Brazilian Grand Prix.

As reported earlier, fuel samples were taken from both cars of both teams during their pitstops in Sunday's race. It was shown that the temperatures of each sample were outside the permitted variation.

Jo Bauer, the FIA technical delegate, said all fuel samples from the four cars showed temperature of 12 to 14 degrees lower than the ambient temperature at the time.

Article 6.5.5 of the Formula One technical regulations states: "No fuel on board the car may be more than ten degrees centigrade below ambient temperature."

However, after lengthy deliberations at Interlagos, the race stewards decided not to penalise the teams, making the race results of the Brazilian Grand Prix official.

Y'know, the bookies were offering a "patriotic treble" of England beating Russia at football, beating South Africa at Rugby, and Hamilton winning the World Championship.

it's not over yet:

McLaren have informed the FIA of their intent to appeal the stewards' decision not to penalise the BMW and Williams teams.

A report from Jo Bauer, the FIA technical delegate, stated that temperatures of fuel samples taken from both cars of each team were outside the regulations.

Article 6.5.5 of the Formula One technical regulations states: "No fuel on board the car may be more than ten degrees centigrade below ambient temperature."

The International Court of Appeal would have to accept the appeal, and then a date would be set. If then, should the Court of Appeal overturn the stewards' decision and disqualify the BMW and Williams drivers, the new results would elevate Lewis Hamilton to fourth. This would give him enough points to beat Kimi Raikkonen and take the championship.

..... and alonso wants in on the game:

Oct.6 (GMM) Fernando Alonso has openly questioned the stewards' decision not to penalise his teammate Lewis Hamilton for driving erratically behind the safety car last Sunday.

The 22-year-old's bitter title challenger told the Spanish newspaper Diario As on Friday: "I am sure that if it was me (under investigation), I would have gone to sleep with a penalty."

The Spaniard is probably recalling his famous Monza penalty last year, applied after stewards ruled that he impeded Felipe Massa's qualifying lap.

Alonso said of the Hamilton investigation: "But I do not know, because I did not see it (the YouTube clip of the Vettel-Webber crash)."

Reigning world champion Alonso, who is 12 points behind Hamilton after his Fuji Speedway crash, said Hamilton had been warned by race director Charlie Whiting about his driving behind the safety car at Monza last month, after "some drivers complained".

"The race director reminded us before Fuji what you can do -- warm up your tyres, zig-zag, but with a constant speed.

"He said 'you can move, but not change your speed all the time'."
