Derestricted air box ?

HI all
I have been advised to Derestrict the airbox on my car a poxy 1.6 16 V . This should improve responsiveness and add a few BHP (LOL). WIll this cause any harm - eg high fuel consumption etc .

Any one done it ?

Thanks

Generally, anything that allows the air to enter the engine more easily or exit it more easily will improve fuel consumption.

You think it could improve fuel consumption ?

I feared I would have to sell body parts to run it LOL

It is likely that it will improve it. However not to the degree that you will really notice a big difference at the pump.

the main thing that you'll notice is that your car will be louder. You'll get a little more high rpm power, a little less torque, and maybe if you're really luck a little more efficiency.

Thanks Guys

so any other cheap and cheerful mods that can be done at home ?

Extracting ponies out of naturally aspirated four bangers involves quite a bit of digging. Bolt-on modifications, such as a free-flowing exhaust system, unrestrictive intake, or an engine computer re-mapped for a more aggressive tune serve to free up horsepower sacrificed by the manufacturer to meet fuel economy, and emissions requirements.

To really get some ponies out involves digging into your engine, and generally outside of going with forced induction (turbos and superchargers) or nitrous, you'll have to increase displacement, increase compression (sometimes both), or get the engine to breathe better by massaging the intake and exhaust ports and using larger camshafts.

Takes a bit of doing and planning, but getting a fair out of power out of a four-banger is a rewarding experience. I cheated, however, and went straight for the turbo. That'll get you plenty of smiles too.

what kind of car are you trying to modify... narrowing down which power plant you have could lead to different mods to make power

its a pretty common mod amongst ford explorer owners looking to open up their airflow, without spending any money.

call it the swiss cheese airbox mod...

I've got a K&N 'cold air intake' filter with a 2.5" PVC. The boost was only from 150hp to 155hp or so, but that tiny bit really quickens the car off the line(I drive a stick) and it sounds awesome at about 4000rpm. Because of these effects, my gas mileage probably went down, though-why drive like grandma when I can drive like Jr? :D

LOL I have noticed the same a better take off and quicker response - fuel consumption is not noticeably heavier
