a 1993 plymouth laser.
http://img.shopping.com/cctool/PrdIm...2/21650930.JPG (green, but close enough) sorry, I'm too young. :) |
Two weeks after I graduated from college and got my engineering job, I bought the car I've always wanted, I fell helplessly in love with it when I was 12yo in 1961 when they first came out, and this was the first car I ever owned:
A '67 E-Type Roadster, maroon, black leather interior, black convert. top ...I was happier than a pig in mud. http://www.thebritbox.com/BCD%202006...E_burgundy.JPG note: my edit is a nod to the Jag afficianados who would condemn me for calling this an "XKE" so I changed it to the correct "E-Type" |
|
2002 Mazda Protege. It will be two years in August of me owning it.

Well if we're gonna dig that deep, this is me driving my actual first car with my little brother riding in back:
http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...icks1stcar.jpg **Mod note: sorry, no images of children on the TFP** And bobby's '65 Chrysler reminds me of the fond memories I have of the '65 Buick LeSabre I had which I eventually bought as a daily driver so I didn't have to drive my XKE in bad weather/short errands. It had a small block Wildcat V8, I think that was just a 300ci motor, but it always out drag raced my buddy's big block Electra225 which had a 430ci motor or something like that. I bought the Buick with 38k miles on it from the original owner, a Protestant minister, for $600 and it still smelled new and was in perfect condition. |
I had some rusted-out Datsun Pickup, in faded red. I don't even remember what year it was... wait, I found it, 1976. I think this is a picture of one of them...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ne/datsun1.jpg ...my dad found it for $500 in 1985. It also had a Baha bumper on the front. My dad was afraid I'd hit something, and all that would be left would be me holding the steering wheel in the middle of the road. He replaced it shortly thereafter with a 1972 BMW 2002, painted Colorado Sunrise. Another $500 car, but a much better deal. And you could see it a mile away. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3.../72bmw2002.jpg |
first and only vehicle so far
93 ford explorer, Red, 4x4, named Bertha and heres a picture of her and me at "On top of the World" in Moab Utah last year http://www.jschrodt.net/pics/Utah/PC...op%20small.JPG |
I could have sworn my first car was a 78 model, but I cant seem to find a picture of it before 1980, I got it in 1986
It was an AMC Concord Station Wagon. I bought it for 500 bucks (my high school graduation money) http://messageboard.techsavy.net/upl...MC_Concord.jpg I loved this car, I had some VERY good times in it hehehe |
I will never forget my first car. I had to share it with my older sister. It was brown, not shiny, but more of a shit brown. It had a hole in the floor and smelled like an attic. We got it used, very used.
Here it is in white. It sure looks much nicer than mine did. http://www.adclassix.com/images/79vwrabbitsedan.jpg |
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...san_Sentra.jpg
1983 Nissan Sentra (was around the time when Datsun was becoming Nissan). Mine was a family car, two-door, red with a brown driver's door and a tan passenger side fender. By the time I was finished with it, it had a darker red fender on the driver's side, I accidentally took it over a cliff (I thought it was suitable for offroading, apparently I was incredibly wrong), it burst into flames while I was driving it. I don't really miss that car. I'm sure it doesn't miss me. Quote:

Ford Tempo Coupe, like a 1993 or 94, 5 speed. It was good enough. |
http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/8...ueprizmzg1.jpg
(not mine, same color though) 1996 Geo Prism--Drove this bad boy into the ground. Glad I got a lot of my beginning driver shenanigans out of the way before selling it and getting my MR2. Edit: i was going to post that I don't think I ever had sex in the back of the Prizm, but then i realized I didn't lose my virginity until I sold it for the much cooler MR2. Related? Who knows! Correlation may not be causation, but I'm sure rocking a sexy sportscar instead of an offbrand corolla didn't hurt things |
JStrider,
That's an awesome shot of you and your Explorer. I'd think if you sent that in to Ford, they'd pay you a couple mil to use it in commercials since it's more believable (at least to me) than the Lock Ness monster heaving a Toyota. |
My first car was a 1994 Ford Escort LX.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...o/95escort.jpg It wasn't the worst car I ever owned (that distinction goes to my friend's 1994 Ford Probe that he sold me, complete with balky transmission and broken automatic seatbelts) but it was the one that I kicked myself for getting for the next six years afterward since I had passed on a beautiful '91 CRX Si because it didn't have a back seat. It was a decent car, save for the fried clutch (the result of an ill-advisied attempt at street racing) and leaky master cylinder, but man oh man did you ever (not) feel those 88 horses from that SOHC 1.9L engine. It was the only car that I had that required a downshift all the way to third to have enough gusto to make it up some of the hills around me. After some unscrupulous theves took my Escort away from me, I made up for the error of not buying that Honda buy tracking down the cleanest CRX around, and all was right with the world once again. |
I bought my mother's bright orange with chrome detail 1972 Opel GT. In highschool, this was even more fun to drive than my buddy's TransAm.
I don't have a pic ready, but here is one that I googled: http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...00/Opel_GT.jpg http://www.opelclub.com/html/opel_gt___faqs.html |
Wow, some of you had great first cars. I haven't decided whether it's okay for a parent to help buy the first car or to allow the kid the opportunity to earn the money themselves. I earned all of my cars, but it would have been nice to have something reliable before graduating from college.

1979 Plymouth Volare.
http://l3auto.com/images/1979%20Plym...lare%20003.jpg sigh. It was blue with a spectacular new paint job... until I cracked it up in the middle of 7 lanes of traffic on 301 in Sarasota. Then I was punished with one of these babies... http://www.chooseyouritem.com/classi...dtop.Sedan.jpg 1975 Oldsmobile Delta 88... baby poop yellow with a baby poop brown top. Yeah, baby. |
I expected to see at least three old VW bugs in here. So that's a surprise. :)
I had this baby: http://www.edmunds.com/media/seo/500/1991.honda.crx.jpg Not the same year, but mine pretty much looks the same. Different red, though. (Mine was way cooler.) |
Ahhhh the CRX. Friend of mine has one. Damn fun little car to drive. That thing's a gokart with a roof.

http://www.lotpro.com/jpg/large/7301.jpg I had a 1997 Jetta until some douchebag rear-ended me and totalled it. I was stopped at a stop light and he nailed me at 55 MPH in an older camaro. Went under the car busted the frame and shifted the rear axle about 6 inches. |
'73 Pinto station wagon
http://www.mabank.net/images/1974-ford-pinto-1.jpg Mine was a pissy green. We called it the Pinto Warrior. Take out the spare tire, throw in a keg of beer and some ice and it was rolling keg party. |
http://a332.g.akamai.net/f/332/936/1...ica.2203-E.jpg
My first car was a 1991 Chevy Corsica. Same color as the one in the picture, but I never got it to look near as glossy and perfect as the one in the pic. Oh, and mine had tinted windows and styled steel wheels. I had it from the time I was 16 until just last year, when I was 26. Yikes! |
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...0/Civic_2g.jpg
Good ol 83 civic wagon, although tan not the blue in the picture. Other then being totally fugly, it got pretty good gas mileage and could seat 5 legally. Was the first of many cars I owed old as or older then myself. |
http://www.canada4salebyowner.com/im...cloc/240SW.JPG
Beautiful '85 Volvo Station Wagon. Except mine was a lovely blue. It also came from my mom with about 238k miles on it. Silly old beast it was, but it turned on a freakin' dime. http://www.hubcapcafe.com/i/2000/dennys/coug6801.JPG First car I bought on my own was a '68 Cougar. Painted an ugly silver and it always ran like garbage, but it was loud enough to set off every car alarm down my street so I was happy. |
1964 1/2 Mustang. 6 cylinder, 3 speed. Paid $400 for it in 1972 the week before I turned 16 with my own money.

This was my first vehicle http://www.pilesgm.com/Carshow/CAR%2...MC%20TRUCK.jpg 1971 gmc pick up 3 on the tree drove it while I was in high school.
First car I bought was a 1971 gto same ugly brown as this one http://classic-car.y2u.co.uk/Photo_c...tiac_GTO_5.jpg Same gaudy landau roof, ram air 400 the car boogied for its day, gave it to my brother when I went into the Marines, he drove it for years and started his love for Pontiacs, while I went to the Bowtie. |
http://www.adclassix.com/images/77oldsdelta88.jpg
But mine was a nice yellowish beige. The seats were like sitting on a couch though. I bought it in 1993 with about 35,000 miles on it. CHERRY. |
My first - and only car up to this point - is my 2001 Volkswagen Citi Golf.
http://www.drivesouthafrica.co.za/db...c1large_57.jpg Mine's a champagny bronzy colour though. And yes, I've done it in the back. :D |

A funny story, I was 15 my oldest bro. had graduated from University of Denver and was the youngest staff writer on the Rockey Mountain News and he came home with a 69 navy blue bug w/sun roof, he told my parents he was going to Paris with this 30 year old woman to tutor her daughters in English(yea like we believed that). He also had some good new and some bad news - he was leaving his car for me but he still owed $1800 bucks on it.
http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/4422/bug2sr5.jpg http://img370.imageshack.us/img370/7361/bug3nu9.jpg http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/4422/bug2sr5.jpg I loved that car, took it on jeep trails all over, loved the sunroof and the 8 track player & 4 speakers I installed. Oh yea, did it in the back! |
Quote:
My first choice the day I bought that car was a '63 Chevy II with a 283 V8 and added-on 4-speed. That thing hauled balls but my parents vetoed and I wound up with the Mustang. |
Had a black '66 Mustang with the 289 HiPo. Rebuilt the 289, put it behind a nice C4 automatic, and it would hit high 12's with Et Streets and a little shot of juice. I wrecked it about a year later after someone pulled out in front of me (stock brakes suck ass!). Sold it because I didn't really feel like spending all that money repairing it.
|
1969 Buick Skylark, Dark Green, Tan Interior. It had a 350 V8 in it. I used to blow the doors off the other cars. There were very few that actually bested me. I made it from Hazlet, NJ to Bradford, PA (385.56) in 4.5 hours, including a fuel/potty stop.
God I loved that car :) Not mine, but very similar: http://awesomecarauctions.com/upload...onv-782074.jpg |
'73 plymouth Duster, slant-6 engine, faded sky blue. Drove it around for 5 years (mind you, that's from 2002 to 2007).
Finally bought an '04 Dodge Dakota at the beginning of this year. Friends joked that I wouldn't know how to drive anything less than 30 years old (was strange at first). |
My first car was originally gonna be a 91 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, given to me by my grandpa, who was too old to drive. However, my dad did the most (materially) generous thing that he had ever done for me (up to that point) and gave me his 94 Honda Accord so that he could have the land barge. He told me it was because of the safety features and because its actually possible to lock yourself inside the Olds, but let's see a good deed for what it is: I wasn't going to have nearly as much fun in the Olds as I did in the Accord.
I took such good care of the Accord, it impressed my Dad to the point where he let me use it as a trade-in when I finally bought my own car... a 2002 Honda Accord Coupe. |
not exactly my first car but my first NEW car....
Graduated fron college in 69 and my folks gave me (and "MY OLD LADY") a new datsun 510 2 door coupe...had a am radio as an option ....went directy to the tyre store and put Pirelli P-77's on it....still have the recipt for the car ..........1995.00.... kept it till about 1980,still miss it! http://www.adclassix.com/images/69datsun2.jpg XOXOXOO:thumbsup: |
The first car that I owned was a used mid-80s Chevy Cavalier. Mine was light blue.
http://dts.ystoretools.com/1242/imag...air-manual.jpg I much preferred to drive my Mom's car, a 280ZX. http://memimage.cardomain.net/member.../336708_67.jpg |
Charlatan, I now see that your coolness is genetic. Your mum drove a 280zx, she had to be the coolest mother ever. My mum drove a frickin Tempo.
My first car was a 1992 Chevrolet Beretta GT. White, auto, with a shag seat cover on the driver's side to cover the damaged upholstery. http://www.beretta.net/model_info/images/92aGT.jpg (not mine, but identical appearance.) Man, I miss that car sometimes. It doesn't matter that what I drive now is much more... respectable. There's just nothing like your first. |
I had a 1982 Chevy Caprice Classic that was a hand me down from my older brother. He had put a cherry bomb glasspack muffler on the thing so it was loud as fuck. One of the funnier quirks about the car was that when the windshiled wipers were turned on, they wouldn't turn off unless the car were turned off. So in order to turn them off whilst driving, I would have to put the car in neutral, turn off the ignition, re-start the car and then shift back into drive.
http://www.caixadefantasia.com/pnet/...rros0252_1.jpg My brother had also wired the reverse lights to come on whenever the brakes were pushed. I'm sure many a person was freaked out upon rolling up behind me at a stop light and seeing my reverse lights on. Sadly the cops were less than amused. They never find it as funny as you do. |
91 Volvo 740....a hand-me-down from a family friend with about 163k miles on it, still have it (I'm nearly 23 now, got the car in late '05). Nothing fancy, but quite reliable...save some admittedly pricey maintenance, never had to do any serious work on it. Worst thing about the car is that the A/C doesn't work, and for an old family sedan, it's faster than you'd think.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...700_Series.jpg Got this photo from the internets, but it's pretty much exactly what my car looks like. |
A well used (180k miles) 1978 Saab 99 in potato brown (antelope tan according to the specs). I took it to well over 300k in four years while in the navy driving all over the west and it was a real tank. Finally I screwed up an went off a freeway overpass, landing at 45 deg on the roadway and bent up the front end, a final beating it never fully recovered from :( The last pic is what I'm sure it's doing now that its gone on to a better place...

VW Golf III, 1.8CL from 1994

Never did it in the back. Rally'ed it, raced it, drove it across Europe, and generally did everything ill-advised to do in one's first car. Oh, and mine was metallic dark red - chilli metallic in teutonic terms, and the "The Giant Zucchini" among friends... |
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...51_25_full.jpg
1970 Buick LeSabre. mine was a darker green and had stock wheels. wasnt in that good condition either.. |
My grocery-getter:
2004 Chevrolet Colorado 4x4 Cred Caw, 220hp 3.5L I5 http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a13...pt07_Small.jpg Too bad it had soft cylinder heads. Good thing I sold it before it ess-ploded on me. |
thats your first car?
|
Wait... how old am I? :D Oh, okay.
First one I bought, anyway. Dropped $XXk on it as a down payment, paid the rest in a year with my Iraqi deployment bloodmoney. No fuckin' around. I don't consider the hand-me-downs from dead relatives, although they're definitely a pity story. I drove a beige mid-'80s Merc Grand Marquis with whitewalls for a number of years. No pictures and bad memories. |
No pictures and bad memories.
had a couple of cars like that too... |
1996 Chevrolet Malibu. It had a few small, annoying problems, but overall was a sturdy, reliable car.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...oletMalibu.jpg Random note for those of you who have seen the new Malibu ads: I'm sure it's very comfortable and stuff like that, but the _hybrid_ version has similar gas mileage to my '96. I wish American car makers weren't so massively dumb. |
The '02 Mazda Protege is my first and only car. I got it in 2005 with only 26,000 miles on the odometer!

My first car was a 1972 VW Super Beetle. Fun little car to drive, too.

This was my first, and still my only car, a grey Ford Contour. I am looking into getting a new car, though, since it has problems overheating and it likes to die at stoplights. Probably i'll get an old Civic. |
Y Reg Austin Maestro 1.3 (1983)
Piece of shit The license place was worth 250 notes though (Y789 AMY) |
I had a 1994 Ford Mondeo. Not a very exciting car, but ran well and had lots of space... until the head gasket blew on a motorway, costing me a ton in towing fees.
|
first car was a 86 plymouth reliant, same as this one except dark blue/grey

1972 Chevrolet Kingswood station wagon. I loved that car been trying to find another one for a long time now. this is not my car but mine looked just like it, same colour.

My first was a 67 Camaro, bought the car as a drivable 350 that was almost all stock. Ended up getting a full 454 from a family friend that I rebuilt myself and got a supercharger for this beast, I ended up lowering the car 2 inchs putting 17 inch rims all around had the chrome re chromed. This car was my baby but when time came to move I sold it off to a muscle nut down in Cali, kicking myself for selling it to this day but I love my Malibu.
I can't find my old pics of the Camaro which sucks but here is my Malibu. http://home.cogeco.ca/~tylerdonlon/c...ibu_new_16.jpg http://home.cogeco.ca/~tylerdonlon/c...ibu_new_60.jpg |

1991 Honda Accord Sedan in Dark Blue.
I think the cars in this design series represent the current peak-to-date of the Accord aesthetic. I had it for a few years with no problems to speak of... one of my brothers borrowed it, parked it downtown and got it broken into. This screwed up the shifter (they apparently planted feet on the dashboard and just forced it back to more easily steal the radio). The car continued to function fine until it was borrowed a second time (again without asking) and driven around in between drive and neutral all day. "I think there's something wrong with your transmission." Oh, really? |

1973 Super Beetle, fresh off the lot for $2700. Drove the shit out of it for 12years, traded it for a major piece of shit used '81 Escort. When I traded her, there was no driver's seat covering left(a towel covered the springs), no gas gauge, no odometer, the brake light stayed on because the rear taillight tilted to the side from being hit, there was a 1/2 inch of ice on the passenger floor and could only get $5 worth of gas at a time lest I get overcome with gas fumes....GAWD!!! I loved that car....the only photo I could find of it, complete with hanging taillight!

When I was 10, I saw Smokey and the Bandit for the first time and I got hooked. When I turned 16, my Dad fronted me the cash to buy a car so it had to be a Trans Am. It was a black on black 78 with gold trim and had an Olds 403 under the hood. The only thing missing was the T-Tops. This isn't it, but it looks pretty close.

Very nice car. 4 speed or 3? |
1993 Ford Ranger Supercab - I've had 4 cars since I got this one (Two Toyotas, a Ford and an Infiniti) and I still have this one. It's got 177,000 miles on the clock and it's still ticking. The picture is from last fall, still looks great!
I did buy new tires and wheels for it last weekend off of craigslist, so I'm in it for the (very) long haul. http://kippandmarissa.googlepages.com/IMGP1016.JPG |

Some seriously wicked cars in here.
Can't find a good online picture of my first car (yet), but with any luck I'll locate my old photo album in the next few days. 1963 Buick Wildcat, fully loaded and totally mint. My Grandfather bought it new and almost never dove it, he usually drove his truck. 4 door, Hardtop with optional FACTORY record player. Yes a record player, held 13 45 size records and I never could make that thing skip, god knows I tried hard enough. White paint with white interior, leather seats, woodgrain dash. dam thing was a land yacht but I loved that car. |
'87 Pontiac 6000 STE
http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_i...0004_large.jpg It got me through the last 2 years of high school until her death in 1995. She overheated at every red light. I had a brand new radiator put in, a bunch of other shit, etc. Then one day at a red light, she bled oil. Everywhere. Oh teh horror. |
An early 1955 Chevy pickup. Same body as the 1948-54.
