Google Maps - The next step

I figured I'd post this here since it's map related and I got the news from autoblog.
http://www.autoblog.com/2007/05/29/h...view-function/

It's pretty cool!

That's so cool. I welcome the increased god-like ability that google provides.

It is very much like being a bird everywhere in the world, my friends. Makes me feel so small, though.

Interesting! Now, they just need to get approval to tie this feature into intersection traffic cameras so I can take public nudity to a completely new level.

It always amazes me how far we've come in the last 10-15 years. We were all using dial-up and barely touching email and now I can type in my address and view my front door.

Who walked around and took the pictures?

The only thing I found dissapointing about the NYC version is not being able to look up. What kind of tourist in NYC doesn't look up at all the tall buildings?!

I'm assuming they had a ring of cameras mounted on a car or van. Some photos keep up with the traffic as they progess down the street.

taking 6-8pictures for a panoramic would take too long(i think). I'm thinking this is 1 picture. a camera that can do a panoramic like a dome. I've seen it before.

if i find the link, i'll post it again.

The tool has been located - as described in this post on Engadget, you can see the photo van's reflection while using Google Maps.

Someone had way too much free time to find that. Which pretty much defines the Internet.

(edit) And, according to other comments, the camera itself is sold by Immersive Media.
