NYPD goes Dukes of Hazzard

NYPD Puts Up Its Dukes

Come this summer, you may see a new NYPD car - the Dodge Charger, best known as the Dukes of Hazzard car. The NYPD is adding fifteen 4-door Chargers for its Highway Unit - they must really love the Hemi - and ten will be tested this summer. Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said, "We're always looking for good equipment, including a little muscle in the car department," which almost sounds dirty. Of course, the NYPD's cars will have "fortified front seats, no rear-door handles and heftier brakes" according to the Daily News. Gothamist just hopes "Dixie" won't play on the siren.
I recall when California Highway Patrol got the Camaros and the Mustang 5.0s, they claim that it was to shorten high speed chases, as for high speed chases here on the highways of NYC... that's a funny one!

Do you guys have any specialty PD vehicles where you live?

I recall BMW 318i in Singapore.

StanT 02-10-2006 08:17 AM

Until last year, the Aspen PD used Saabs.

Where I live, SUVs and pickup trucks are fairly common. Crown Vic's are the predominant vehicle in the flatland, but in the mountains, 4wd is more common.

There are a few Mustang GTs and Z28 Camaros still around here, but they have to be getting old enough to be taken out of service.

A good friend of mine has one of the new Chargers with the 5.7L Hemi in it. I can definitely see it's advantage over the Crown Vic or Impala currently being used around me. Many of the local forces are switching to SUVs though too.........

Jefferson Co. PD (now Louisville Metro) has always had a vast array of vehicles. There are Crown Vics, Jeep Cherokees, Camaros, Mustangs, Tahoes, Impalas and on and on. I can remember back in the late '70's we even had Jeep CJ's with complete markings. The unmarked vehicles are even more varied... once I saw a full-sized Chevy pickup pulled someone over.

I think the oddest cruiser I saw was in Georgetown, KY (where they build Toyota Camrys). All the cruisers there are Camrys (makes sense but still odd looking).

we have a couple crazy cops here in the Cleveland suburbs that still drive their Harleys in the winter, they are just f-in nuts if you ask me, sure we had a warm front come through, but it wasnt THAT freekin warm...

TheClarkster 02-11-2006 12:04 AM

At my school in Northridge, I think just the K-9 units drive around in Dodge Magnums.
Never seen those anywhere else.

Scorps 02-11-2006 02:12 PM

We have a PT Crusier and a Magnum here but besides them 2 its the Ford Crown Vic's

But I have been waiting for someone to make a charger police car ever sense it came out!

Up in Maine we have a few Suburbans, plenty of pickups of varying make, an unmarked van or two (sneaky sons of bitches), and during the summer a variety of mounted, motorcycle, and bicycle cops. Nothing terribly interesting, though.

I live in Vermont, I travel between my home and college at least once a month, and there's an unmarked black Camaro that everyone in Vermont knows about and hates between Bennington and Rutland, if you ever go between the two places on Rt 7 you'll probably see someone pulled over by him.

barenakedladies 02-23-2006 06:27 AM

i loved when they started using camaros. I actually got pulled over one time in 95 by one with my 94 z28 and i told the cop it was a priveledge to get pulled over by one, however i wished he would have gone on a little chase, it would have been fun. the officer was not amused

I recall several people telling me when i was younger that CT used to have a few Grand National chase cars. MA has the LX 5.0's and the usual assortment of Bikes, Explorers, etc. My buddy in MD had his State Police Caprice modded by the shop mechanics into a souped up Impalla SS complete with the badges. I was surprised they didn't make him change the exhaust, it was soo loud!

Bill O'Rights 02-23-2006 06:59 AM

Son-of-a...Bitch!

All I ever got to use was an old Crown Vic.

Maybe, just maybe mind you, if I had me one of those...I might still be wearin' a shield. ;)
It might be somewhat shallow of me...sure. But, I look at it this way; when I wasn't chasin' dirtballs across back yards, my time was spent in a cruiser. Might as well make the most of my time? Plus, that might've gone a long way toward helping me fend of burn out.
