That Pink and Black Dress
I remember the way she stood there waiting with
her head tilted just so, making her hair dance like a silk curtain just behind her shoulders, creating a solid backdrop for an appealing neckline. She wore just a tease of a smile on her lips accented pink tonite to match her pink and black dress. I stood in the back of the room, and though I don't remember, I think I was smiling too. I probably was smiling because I also remember the way she stood on the stage, with two original pieces of art to her right. The auctioneer describing to the crowd how each piece creates a atmosphere of harmony, and how much time and love must have went into creating such a beautiful work, and how everyone in the room should feel lucky just to be seeing it before someone got to take it home. After he said that I'm sure I was smiling, because his words made me laugh inside as I didn't even notice what the paintings were of, but he just as easily could have been describing her, and her pink and black dress. But unlike one of those paintings, she was going to be leaving with me. I stood there watching her in that pink and black dress as her eyes scanned the crowd. Her left hand timidly playing with the pink ribbon tied in a bow about her waist. As the auctioneer continued, I could see she was beginning to feel self-conscious standing on the stage. Her eyes glanced amongst the faces of all of these people she did not know, And slowly her abbreviated smile disappeared. I could see her nervously biting her bottom lip as another woman walked across the stage and handed her the sculpture that had just been sold to one of the unknown faces in the crowd. And with that she began to walk towards the stairs at the left of the stage, watching her feet as she stepped, avoiding the stares of the nameless crowd, still biting her bottom lip. And just before she reached the stairs she looked up for one more brief second to survey the crowd, and at that moment she looked directly at me, and smiled. And if what I had been feeling before hadn't yet made me smile, I know I smiled then. She carefully descended the stairs and floated to the side of the room, the pink chiffon at the bottom of her dress brushing the back of her calves as she walked. Then, right as she passed one of the pillars seperating the rooms and moved briefly out of my site, I noticed the two men standing next to me watching her walk just as I had been. Smiling just as I had been. And that is why I lay awake at 5:24 a.m. thinking about how much I love that pink and black dress more than any man should. |
