Favorites/influences?

I did a bit of a search but it didn't seem there were any threads of this. But it is late and I could be delirious. Anyway:

What are your favorite authors/poets?

Who has been an influence on your own work?

Whose work do you want to read more of?

What are you currently reading?

I have always loved Poe, Gogol and of course, Tolkien. I don't write any myself, though.
I have read a bit of Saul Williams' poetry, which was amazing. I want more!
Currently I am actually reading the old testament. I am not a religious nut or anything, but I decided that because of the amount of impact the old testament has had on history in the past few thousand years, and because I doubt very few people have actually read it or know what's in it (they just let others tell them what to think it is about) that I should read it.
My copy comes with a lot of commentary. It is actually pretty fun so far.

TS Eliot is a big influence on my writing style, his imagery is so vivid and driving.

For prose though, I really enjoy John Irving and E.L. Doctorow

What are your favorite authors/poets?

Authors: F. Scott Fitzgerald by far so beautiful, graceful and natural his style. Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide series very funny.

Poets: Ray Davies (lead singer of the KINKS) songs are poems, again so beautiful and well written with just the right amount of humor added.

Who has been an influence on your own work?

In my poetry I would hope Ray Davies. in my short stories I have my own style but occasionallywhen doing narrative description I will try to be as flowing as F. Scott.

Whose work do you want to read more of?

Clive Barker and Douglas Adams

What are you currently reading? Nothing right now, had to read Sula for english and hated it immensely. Getting ready to read the Frog King by Adam Davies.

I think John Irving is an amazing writer.

I love Lola Haskins for poetry. My favorite authors tend to be french. I love Andre Gide and Albert Camus. They can be so expressive without saying much. I don't know if any of them influence me enough, because my writing still sucks. Right now I am reading the Immoralist by Gide.

my favorites are jeanette winterson and haruki murakami (translated amazingly well).

both writers have a heavenly talent for finding beauty in the world around us and tweaking it just so, so that you're drawn into the books dreamy combo of mystery, tragedy, and philosophy.

for winterson, try sexing the cherry and written on the body.

for murakami, try "hard boiled wonderland and the end of the world" and "a wild sheep chase." his "after the quake" short stories are quite nice too, but certainly not in the same vein as his novels.

not being a writer, i don't have influences. sorry. hope y'all like these recommendations.

Re: Favorites/influences?

What are your favorite authors/poets?
Authors: I've always liked reading John Grisham's law trillers.
Poets: Shakespeare is amazing.
Both categories: My mom, even though she hasn't had her short children's stories or poems published yet, she will... it's only a matter of time... and she really knows what she's doing with the years of studying literature on her own that she's put herself through...

Who has been an influence on your own work?
Shakespeare, and I don't really know who else other than maybe some of the greek philosophers I've studied. Not certain how much of an influence they've had on my writing, but I know they've influenced my thinking.
Mirevolver has influenced my work. But then, that happens when both you and your best friend are writing poetry and helping each other out here and there.:)

Whose work do you want to read more of?
Shakespeare, The Bible (both new and old testiments).

What are you currently reading?
Nothing really. Parts of The Book of John here and there. And if I ever get the time, I have to read the DUNE series as well as Tolkien's famous Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings series.
