The Yak-List

I was cleaning out my room today and found some old floppy disks, which i had school work on.
This is a short story i wrote in year 11 (i think) when i was 15 about a yak-list. To yak, means to throw up, especially after drinking too much alcohol. The story itself fictional, but we actually did have a yak list in high school and the setiment about the males fear of it was very true.

THe writing is quite juvenille and not too imagitive, but such was my writing as a 15 year old. Sorry, i never was particualry good at english

The Yak-List

It was Friday and everyone was pumped for the party that night. School seemed to drag on forever but the anticipation of the party got you through it. Party's where always great because of the drinking, it helped separate reality and imaginary life. When you where drunk you're invincible, you can't feel pain, you can easily talk to others and you feel good inside. However when you throw up (yak) you find the price you pay for such a good feeling. That's if you yak. There was always the horror of coming in Monday to school to find you were on the yak-list. A chart that documents how many times you yakked and what days. I think most of us saw it as a sign of weakness (especially the boys) and that you were weak if you threw up. There was always someone who put someone up even if they didn't. The Monday after the Friday party was one of these occasions.

Steve had organised the list at the start of year 11. We saw it as a joke but in retrospect it was a bad idea. This Monday, he had put up Pete and he had, had a couple but there wasn't a chance that he had yakked. Jokingly Steve put him up there and everyone was giving him crap. Pete got so bitter that he smashed Steve, two good friends in a fight over the list was such a sorry sight. Perhaps Pete wanted to make up for his apparent weakness. Pete was known to be a bit violent but this was stupid of him getting a week suspension and Steve a broken nose. I think that will be the last time Steve will ever blatantly put anyone's name up. From then on I think everyone was a little angry at Pete but I feel sorry for him. The next week we didn't have a party, perhaps a good thing because I had a heap of homework.

Well the week after Jimbo's parents where going away and so inevitably we had a party. It consisted of the usual events drinking games, talk around the table, people acting stupid to get a laugh, long walks to the deli or to pick up new party goers and then the vandal run which normally occurred in the early hours of the next mourning, about 2 or 3am. Drinking games start off the night which gets people to a quick start. I normally took it moderately slow finishing in the early hours to make it on the run of destruction. There were the common acts of stupidness, John had put his wine box on his head as a hat which was pretty funny though. Steve, recovered from his broken nose was allowed to draw on Pete's face, seems they were cool again or that Pete was too done to realise what was happening. Jane and most of the other girls had caught a Taxi home so Liam, Matt and I decided to check out the other party around the block because nothing much else was happening.

On the way we saw Kevin, we didn't really like him but he was pretty big so we didn't abuse him. He was hung over this fence yakking his brains up. We laughed at him but he asked what was so funny. He said he had been casually spitting into the garden, the excuses I have heard before for yakking are always funny. Again none of the boys what to be seen as not being able to handle alcohol. They might be portrayed as weak and pathetic, defiantly what Kevin didn't want. We just laughed at him, but with time and drinking we forgot the incident. We then continued to the next party.

There was only four people there, they used to go to our school so it was nice to catch up in a drunken state. We had even more to drink there and Liam went to sleep on the couch, while me and Matt talked to the others. After being there for about an hour we decided to head back. Matt wanted to stay a while longer though so me and Liam headed back. After walking about a hundred metres Liam leaned along side a stop sign and yakked all over it. It was a horrid site, but I do realise now that he ate my share of the pizza. I said it's alright, we'll get back to Jimbos and you can crash on the floor. He then begged me not to tell anyone and handed my a ten buck note as some kind of bribe. I never knew how much he feared the yak-list, since he was the captain of the footy team he might too be portrayed as weak. I felt sorry for him so I didn't tell anyone and I slipped his note back into his bag when we got back. When we got back Liam crashed on the floor and I didn't mention the event.

We got back at about one am and it was getting close to the vandal run. John, Steve and Pete where still going strong, Jimbo was just sitting in his chair listen to some Alice in Chains. Twenty minutes later Matt got back. Matt was sobering up so he went for one of his beers. Just before Pete and Steve were joking on how they had drunk someone else's stuff, I didn't think much of it until Matt got back. Alcohol was considered more than a material possession but a magical substance that bought you so much, so you can image how distraught Matt was when he discovered they where gone. Swearing here and there Matt stomped and punched the wall, but Pete and Steve kept there mouth shut. So I shouted Matt some and by then it was about time for the vandal run.

It was good because none of the girls where there to oppose the whole event, although Jane sometimes came, if she was drunk enough. The thrill of throwing rocks and then bolting was electrifying and a major adrenalin rush, especially if someone chased. I guess it's just a male thing, just like fearing the yak-list. This time though we where only out for about twenty minutes before everyone got tiered and wanted to go to bed. We got back at about one thirty, I made a sandwich and got a drink of water. The others just crashed on the floor. I sat there eating my sandwich while listening to music. I got to bed at two. The next Monday, no additions to the list, although Liam looked at me with an unusual stare. I stayed quiet putting his reputation ahead of the truth.

The week went slow, as the others did though but this one seemed longer. It was Wednesday and we had our school footy match against Lesmurdie. Liam played horribly and lost the game with undisciplined play because someone called him a girl. We were all a little bitter at him because we missed our chance for the final. Liam had, had a down month his uncle had died, he failed two tests, been dumped by his girlfriend and had played horribly in the semi-final. We decided to throw a party at my place to cheer him up. It was a Saturday night and my parents had gone to some musical in the city. I shouted Liam his alcohol and we also invited this girl who he liked from school.

The night was just getting started and I went into the kitchen to get some food. There was Steve and Pete putting something into a drink. I asked what they were doing. They were putting some medicine that makes you throw up into John's drink. They then left it on the bench for John to come and retrieve. Liam then came in, very excited about the girl and told us it was going great. I was happy for him. But unknowingly in the conversation he had picked up John's drink and downed it in a flash. He then finished talking and went back outside. We were really worried now but we couldn't do anything about it. We went outside and Liam had just finished his second beer. He was talking to the girl at the same time. His face then screwed up and he leaned over and threw up all over the girl. There was yak all over her dress. She just screamed. Liam then went to the edge of the garden and was violently yakking on the ground. Most of our year was there and they were laughing out loud, Jane took the girl to the bathroom to get cleaned up.

After about a minute with Steve, Pete and I just froze still Liam ran inside to my bedroom and locked the door. I think he was crying as others noticed to. I couldn't believe it and would never be able to reveal what we had done to him. We tried to talk to him, but the jokes about him coming from outside kept him locked in. "The little girl can't handle two beers that's pathetic hahahaha", "How weak is that, he's even crying hahahahah", "I thought he was meant to be captain of the footy team hahahahaha". The insults went most of the night, we decided to drink our sorrows away eventually forgetting about the whole thing. The mourning was not good. Liam had bailed but we thought he would be alright.

We thought it may be forgotten on Monday, until Gary who stays sober all night adds Liams name to the list. Liam apologised to the girl but she was so mad at him and even slapped him. Then when he got back from the canteen he saw his name written numerous times on the list. Also in my drunkenness, I must of blurted out how he had paid me to keep quiet and that was on the list. Shortly after Gary made a Liam slap list. Everyone was laughing at him and yelling the insults except Pete, Steve and I. We still couldn't tell him. He missed the next two weeks of school after this and we didn't really know how bad it was until now. It was amazing what the yak-list could do to a boy.

I hope you enjoyed it
