Character Bio
An excellent exercise to build writing skills for a large project is to put yourself into the mindset of the characters. Think as if you are them and then write out a biography of the character. This way you can better know where your character is coming from; what your character may think or feel about a particular situation; and how the character would react to the surroundings presented to them.
Here's an example of one of the characters in the nine-book sci-fi series I'm working one. ____________________________________ Hello, My name is Marc Isaac Revolver. I was born in Armstrong City, North Luna in 2175 according to the Earth calendar. I would say my childhood was a decent one; my Father, Joseph Revolver worked for one of the largest companies in the United Worlds. My mother, Sarah Revolver worked in the United Worlds capitol dome. Because of their careers, they often worked late nights. As an only child, I was often at home by myself from when I got home from school to about ten or eleven o’clock at night. I think it was because of this that I grew up to be an independent and self-sufficient person. When I was fourteen, my parents divorced and my mother was given primary custody. I remember so many times where I would be alone at the house and put myself to bed around ten, only to be woken up an hour later by the arguing of my parents. It seemed as if they constantly argued all night long. It got to the point where I wondered if they had found some way to live without sleep. Often my mother would tell me something about something my father did that angered her and would follow that up with telling me not to tell my father about it. Then an hour later my father would do the same with me about my mother. I came to learn how to keep a secret really well, and I began to distrust my parents. I also think I came to distrust marriage, which might explain why I’m still single. When it came time to look for higher education, both my parents suggested that I apply to the Luna University. But I think that because of the distrust for them I applied to Solforce Academy. When my mother found out she wasn’t happy. At work she had prepared speeches for congressional representatives arguing against the need of a United Worlds military, reasoning that it would only invite some of the alien races to challenge us. My Father held a similar political view and pretty much disowned me when I made my decision to attend the academy. At the academy, I trained in the fighter pilot program. I showed excellent skill behind the controls and my academic work at the academy was exemplary. I graduated with honors and received the rank of junior lieutenant. My first posting was on the flagship of the United Worlds, the U.W.S. Freedom. War has now been declared between the United Worlds of Sol and the Veron Empire. My ship is heading to the front lines tomorrow, this will be my first taste of battle, I don’t know what to expect. Because of the differences I’ve had with my parents, I haven’t spoken with either of them since I left to attend the Academy. If I die in this war, I don’t think either of them would care.
