Bump on Wrist
I have a bump on my left wrist (I'm right handed) that feels painful when I put pressure on it, or when I bend my hand back or forward. It is slightly to the left of all of the veins on the underside of my wrist. It feels like a patch of muscle or something, and it is noticably larger than on my right wrist. I just noticed the bump today, but I've noticed the pain for a few days now.
What could this be? I don't remember getting an injury or anything there. |

I called my mom and she said it could be a ganglion cyst...
http://www.med.und.nodak.edu/users/jwhiting/gangss.html The bump is in the exact spot on the upper wrist (palm facing side up) that they illustrate in the diagram, and I match the symptoms... |

If you're worried go get it checked out... none of us can tell you without seeing it, and most of us couldn't tell you if we did see it.
It could be a ganglion cyst, my mom had one of those and was told she should have surgery to have it removed. Though it's highly unlikely you could have a granuloma but those tend to be something in growing children.

Both me and my brother have had ganglions - and two friends.
He (brother) had his injected and sucked out. It later came back... then went away. Mine simply went away over time. I guess it took a year. I had 3mths of avoiding use and perhaps 3mths of gradually building up weights again while avoiding certain angles. Of course. Your case may be completely different. It may or may not have helped, but I did use hot-cold contrast treatment. ie hot bath and ice-water bath. Gave me something to try anyways and is fairly low risk (I have normal circulation etc and have done this for other injuries). I also hope that it is acceptable in relation to forum rules to suggest asking a pharmacist about over the counter creams. Ask perhaps for something you could rub in, after exercise. To be honest... I'd be careful about surgery. My suggestion (as a non medic) is to look at the other options first and get multiple opinions if necessary. For myself, I think that if I was going to try some procedure - I'd ask for the needle method first. It simply sounds safer, cheaper and faster. Last edited by Nimetic; 12-15-2005 at 08:08 AM.. |

Ganglion cysts used to be treated by slamming them with a Bible- as it ruptures the cyst. Unfortunately, if the cyst ruptures, or it is aspirated with a needle, it usually returns.
The only good way to get rid of it is to surgically excise it. Once the cyst walls are gone, it can't recur. ![]()

The wrist is a classic place to get ganglions. As said above, the only way to get it to go away permanently is surgery. Go see your doctor ASAP, especially if it's causing you significant amounts of pain.

Really - I read that they could come back after surgery? I'll have to re-check. I'm very suspicious of surgeons though. (Every time I have an injury, they say they can operate next week if I like... but when I see the physio, they have other options).
And I figured... if they come back after being aspirated with a needle, well it's not a big deal, since this procedure doesn't sound like much of a disruption. Anyways... Mine just plain went by itself, so I'm happy anyways. : > |
