Not sure if there's a big difference between pilates and yoga, but I prefer pilates. It's not active, yet it seems to somehow get you sore the day after...

Yeah, I like yoga. I do a very basic yoga routine once or twice a week, often with a few friends. While my regime isn't very strict -- I'm never going to progress to harder exercises or become incredibly limber -- it does keep me stretched. For 20 years I suffered back problems which bothered me daily and gave me a week in bed with spasms once or twice a year. When I began yoga, those problems largely receded.
Now -- with a few other changes in my life -- they're gone. Yoga is like a tool that can be adjusted in several different ways to do several different things. Yoga as I practice it is mainly about stretching, relaxation, and mental centering. For matters of physical fitness, I practice weight training, bicycling, and walking. Some forms of yoga, like bikram, are very physically challenging and _will_ get you sore the day after, at least at first. But that's not for me. |

Yoga may get your heart rate up since you have to hold a pose but it certainly doesn't provide cardio benefits. It is for strength, flexibility and meditation. You have to do cardio to get cardio!

![]() I love yoga. There's so much to it and it does so much for me. I couldn't imagine my life without it. I do 15 - 30 minutes a day plus a full work out several times a week. I find it goes really well with swimming. A little yoga to limber me up for the swim. Then the swim gets every super limber and warmed up for more yoga. Then my yoga workout is amazing! |

I do a 55 minute pilates/yoga workout a week. Not much but it's enough to keep me limber. I like the pilates portion since it strengthens the core muscles--ie, works the abs and glutes and the yoga strengthens my upper body. The stretching in general just feels terrific. For cardio, I like walking. I usually combine walking with an active discussion with myself too--which is good for the head. Yeah, my neighbors think I'm a kook.

I love yoga.
I took a class in it from October to December so I was more disciplined in doing it daily. I've been slacking off and I've noticed a lot of problems cropping up that the yoga had prevented. Not big stuff but could get that way. I have carpal tunnel problems and back and neck tension. The yoga helped relieve the pain associated with these because it kept things stretched out and more relaxed. I just blanked on the name of the muscle - but the one that runs across the arch of your foot and up under the heal is pulling and tearing whenever I get up in the morning. I had a lot of trouble with it when I broke my foot this year and had to go to therapy for it. When I stopped therapy it started bothering me again but went away when I was faithful doing the yoga daily. My instructor this past year had gone to a pilates conference and brought back a few things that she actually incorporated into our yoga. It was much more intense than just holding a pose and actually hurt me because it worked my abdomin - which had been cut into 5 times this past year. It wasn't that it caused damage but the scar tissue protested against the workout of the pilates moves. I think pilates would be helpful too but for me the yoga is what I need to stretch and relax. It helps avoid the injuries that I cause myself daily because I'm constantly lifting children from 20 up to 50 lbs. As for cardio - yoga does not work the heart muscle all that much. It does help to control blood pressure which can (in my opinion) possibly help prevent other problems when you do end up doing cardio workouts. Quote:
