Chinese Art Import/Export

I'm thinking of starting a business (based in China or America, not sure) that would export Chinese art to America. The art would all be created after 1912 (China's big dividing line, apparently).

How would I do this? What American laws do I have to take special consideration of, since this is dealing in export from China?

Thanks in advance!

Check with the state department or chmaber of commerce for import restrictions - they recently changed the laws I think making it harder to import/export from China - but, you can always route through a 3rd country.

Also, check with the Chinese Chamber of commerce as well. Some art is not allowed to leave the country - you could have a big mess on your hands otherwise.

Try to attend a China Expo - they have them here in LA. Just do a google search for it. You might be able to hook up with a connection or a supplier.

Are you going to do it wholesale or through a storefront or through a gallery? You can probably check the local stores to see how they are set up. San Gabriel valley has a few storefronts (Montery Park, Alhambra etc). I think there are alot of art galleries in Chinatown now too.

I think a small gallery is the way I'd be doing it, possibly online (since I'm not physically in the States, and I haven't found a partner there yet).

Thanks though, I'll be talking with the Commerce people, see what we can do.

I love this line the best, though : "but, you can always route through a 3rd country." Indeed, what a world, indeed :-) Thanks

You could probably route through Hong Kong (I believe it has different regulations with the US) or maybe try Taiwan?

Are you thinking objets d'art or more along the lines of modern paintings?

By the way, 1912 is what separates Imperial China from the Republic.
