Tibet and silk road

im looking at going on a trekking tour of tibet/china/bhutan. maybe ill follow the silk road through central asia..just depends on my time, mood and money really. anyone done it before?

i have been inspired by a book i read about 2 years ago called 'the carpet wars" by christopher kremmer. who travels through islamic heartlands and comes across inspriing experiences.

im most likely do it alone, or maybe with one of my best friends who now resides in hong kong. looking at doing it march/april next year..

does anyone have any recomendations/experiences? should i go it alone or do it with a tour group...not sure what i want yet, just wondering if wandering the silk road is safe and needed to test your pulse and thoughts on my idea.

feedback would be welcome
