My Day in Chicago
Hey hey,
Spending a day in Chicago by myself - I'm really excited about this ! The college is chartering a bus to there [actually the art museum there] arriving at about 11 AM and have until 8 PM to ourselves to explore chicago... After the $35 bus fare [a bit steep, but I don't know if I could go on my own cheaper anyways...] I have a budget of probably $50-75 Or so, depending how frugal I want to be... I've already checked a few threads [ here here ; but if anyone else had other recommendations or ideas, I'm down to it. Also, I was wondering, if anyone has ever visited the polish district there [polak here]. How is it ? Easy to access - are the cabs expensive; or should I go on a train/bus to travel around [or even walk ?] I'll be checking out AAA for some brochures as well. Thanks, will.

Cabs are a little pricey in Chicago, walking, as long as it's not frigid cold or raining, is really your best form of transport. The CTA (CHicago transit authority) is pretty inexpensive, but depends on how many times you plan on getting on and off the train (SOme cities have day passes for tourists - and it's flat rate that you can use the trains as much as you want -- not sure if Chicago does.)
If you've never been before, either the Sears tower or the hancock tower are both worh seeing -- if it's a clear day that is - the views are impressive - though the sears tower i think is about 10 - 15 bucks. The art institute, if you are into that kind of thing, is worth an afternoon exploring.. otherwise - there's a boat tour you can do of the architecture of chicago (that's very cool) Have fun - _Chicago is a neat city...

I haven't been to the polish village although typically the neighborhoods don't have as many cabs as the downtown area. I also recommend the Museum of Art, is is very good although unless it's a free afternoon can be about $10-$15. I would definitely take in the parks Millienium Park is nice. Lincoln Park is very relaxing, if you go north. The zoo in the park is free and pretty decent. I hope you have a great visit to Chicago. Dress in layers. It's been getting cold lately.

If it is a weekend, you can buy a pass for the weekend for the train that is very inexpensive. I believe it's like $5 for unlimited rides.
The Oceanarium at Shedd's Aquarium is pretty cool......a lot depends on your interests. Sometimes just having a drink at a place that has seating viewing the street can be entertaining in and of itself.
