Spending A Semester In Stockholm....
I'm going to be attending Stockholm University for next semester. I'll be living in Solna near the AIK Råsunda Stadium. If anybody knows of any cool stuff to do in either Stockholm or Solna or if you have any tips for a college student living in Sweden, please let me know. Also, any tips for things in swedish to say to the buxom blondes would be appreciated.
Tack! - D. |
Välkommen till Stockholm! First of all I'd like to congratulate you on having a place to live already. The housing market in Stockholm is overcrowded, the student housing market even moreso. So be very happy about that! Things'll probably be more expensive here, the dollar is weak against the krona plus we have craploads of taxes on everything. You probably won't need a car though because the public transport system is excellent. I don't know exactly where you're from, but be prepared for the winter being cold and snowy. A sturdy pair of boots and a good warm jacket is needed.
There are a lot of things to do and see in Stockholm, so it depends on what you are interested in really. Give me something to work with! I'm mostly into theatre and opera and classic art and boring stuff like that, but I'm not entirely clueless about other things. The buxom blondes speak English very well and will probably be eager to practice on you. ;) By the way, what are you going to study? |
Jealous! Take advantage of the student flight rates while you're there. I think it was about $25 US to fly anywhere in Sweden if you're under 26, when I was over there a few years ago. I flew all over the country to visit friends. Of course, it was $0.85/10 krona when I was there. Beautiful money, too. Off topic, sorry.
Ask around an you'll pick up some serious cursing. I still use them five years later. :D Half the time, the natives spoke English more properly than I did. Try the Swedish moonshine (pink stuff)... it's incredible. But look out for that Spam-on-a-stick stuff (brain fag... forgot the name). Look out for taxi drivers, too. I took several years off my life after riding in a few in Lulea. Absolutely beautiful country. Like nothing I'd ever seen, untraveled Floridian as I was. I'm dying to go back, but all my friends I went to see before have left! |
So jealous... The last time I was in Stockholm was in Sept 2001... I loved it! I was there by myself on business so I didn't have a guide to show me around.
I did like the old town and there was a really good Sci-fi Bookstore there. I also found a few good restaurants but can't remember where they were (I tend to wander aimlessly and so my discoveries are a bit happenstance). I just love that it's a city on water. I wasn't expecting that. I expect that it will be chilly in winter. |
Take the opportunity to travel, not just in Sweden. Europe has an excellent transportation network, and most trains have significantly discounted student/youth fares if you book them soon enough. Don't let the opportunity to see some of Europe be wasted!

If you are in Stockholm... it isn't all that far to Copenhagen and from there it's only a short trip to see Nancy!
