Heading for Britain

In early september - we know where we are going in england but will be tacking on 4 days in Scotland and flying out of Glasgow. Any thoughts on things to see in Scotland? Mostly interested in history and nature, as opposed to cultural events.

Buy yourself a Scottish National Trust membership. It will pay itself back with entry fee discounts.

Head for Edinburgh (And please say Eddin-burrah, not Ed-in-burg like most yanks;
) ) as it has a LOT of historical interest.

Events for September.

In particular try and see some of the highland games and the Bannockburn Battle recreation. (The final battle in 'Braveheart' after Wallace's death)

I was in St. Andrews and its really really beautiful. Just walk around and go to the coast. Well worth it.

The recreation of the Battle of Bannockburn just outside of Stirling is great, I have some friends that take part. From there you can visit Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument as well. Stirling is relatively short drive from Edinburgh so you can hire a car or take a bus. Linlithgow Palace is in the area and is fascinating to explore. Edinburgh has a wealth of things to do. Go to the castle then walk down to the Grassmarket and visit a few pubs. If nature strikes your fancy then a hike in the trossachs or a visit to Lock Lomand near Glasgow is beautiful. Scotland is the most beautiful place in the world so pretty much anywhere you go will be grand.

I hear they have a daily lottery for the chance to play the course if you didn't book a tee time months in advance? That'd be a hoot.

Yeah, thanks, already been to those sites. Got a book called "Scotland Top 10" - can't recommend it enough. We'd been looking at a bunch of other books but this one was really focused, which is ideal since we're only in Scotland for 4 days after 6 in England. Even though the family is from Ayr, we'll likely concentrate on Edinburgh as we're very interested in many of the sites and activites within an hour or so of the city, not to mention the city itself.

(Not a "yank" by the by - Mother's maiden name... Auchinleck!)

:cool:

Oooops.

Insult retracted. ;)
j/k

I should have looked at the location under your name. Just make like most Canadians and sit a maple leaf or your flag on your backpack and people will be a little nicer here.
:D

Do not under any circumstances go to Aberdeen. It is called the granite city, because every building is made out of granite, so everything is grey. It is the most depressing place I have every been to. Avoid at all costs.

And we're STILL going... screw the terrorists, I'm gonna pump a few thousand pounds into the Brit economy!
