in a pinch

I am taking Amtrack to a summer-camp that I am going to be working at up in Maine; but first I'm stopping off in Bankshead NC to visit a friend and do some surfing. The closest my train goes to Bankshead is Richmond Virginia and it's about a three hour drive to Bankshead. I've tried checking with greyhound to get me at least two hours closer but the only way that they could help me is on the way back to the station (time constraints). I can't rent a car (which is what I had planned on doing in the first place) because I'm under 25 (trust me, I've tried). Does anyone have any suggestions on any other options for transportation?

It isn't impossible; see Under 25? What You Need to Know About Car Rentals. Also, have you tried the off-brand rental agencies, something like Ugly Duckling rentals (actual company in Connecticut, perhaps elsewhere)? They might be more forgiving.

Is there a shuttle service going back and forth at all? When I was in Raleigh, I got to Chapel Hill for $2.25 through Triangle Transit, which picked me up at the airport. You might have some luck there, if the train station is in a bigger city.

The station that I will be stuck at is in Virginia and the beach is three hours southeast in North Carolina

Thanks I'll try that idea, and thanks for the webpage, it was helpful

Does anyone know if they check for contraband on a train (lighters, pocket knives (I'm going to camp), that sort of thing) before you get on the train like they do at the airport?

On Amtrak's Metroliner between DC and NY and the Northeeast Direct from NY to Boston they don't check for anything...occassionally I am asked for ID but even that is rare...
