New Online Bank beats ING

Hey folks,

I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about these guys.

http://www.emigrant-direct.com/?source=YAHMP00019

I already have an ING account (US - 3%) and was curious about this new one. I have some more money I could either start a new account with the "new guys" or toss it in the ING. I like to keep as much money in the savings in between bills, and trying to figure out what to do with it. You know, squeeze every last penny. Beats keeping it in my shoe box.

Hey Soma,

Thanks a bunch for the info: It was really helpful (by the way, that is some site).

Right now, Emigrant Bank is offering 3.25% compared with ING (all other things being roughly equal to ING - FDIC insured, no minimums, no fees etc). I suppose ING may match later on.

I suppose the real question, is it silly to be moving money around like this for .25%? It seems like nickel-and-diming to me. I have an extra $1000-2000 that I would toss into an Emigrant account. I was just wondering if I should do that or just throw it in the ING.

You are asking if it is better to have $2.50 more at the end of the year? I can't see any way it can be bad...

Well, isn't it more likee whether or not $2.50 more at the end of the year is worth the trouble of opening and managing another account?

Anyway, thanks for the info - I might open an account with them in addition to my ING account if ING doesn't catch up soon. For now, it's not worth the trouble for me.

A better way to put it would be, it it worth the grief for a reward of $2.50?

If you're talking about shutting down another online account such as INGDirect so you can open this one, I'd say no.

If you don't already have an online account that's paying well, I'd say yes, start one somewhere.

I heard that ING puts $25 in your account when you start one, but perhaps that is old news.
More importantly, I read that Emigrant Direct's service is poor compared to ING. I read from multiple sources that calling ING will get your problem resolved, whereas calling Emigrant will create new problems and frustrations for you. I feel that this is a rather compelling reason to pick ING because finances are a sticky issue (Unlike computers, where you can generally get away with doing your own tech support)
