Yeah, always be sure to weigh yourself at the same time each day, morning is usually best.

I'm reading through a lot of these posts, and wondering if anyone ever does a body fat percentage count? I mean, I weigh rather a lot for my height (5'8"/155lbs), but I am very muscular and lean *enough*. If you have a lot of muscle tone, it doesn't really matter how much you weigh. Body comp. is much more revealing of fitness levels than a number on a scale.
Just curious.

you know... i had been thinking about that same thing.... since i work out a lot, that must affect my weight... and someone in my family made a comment about that recently too, that i wasn't taking my body fat into account when i read 134lbs.

anyway, I think you look PERFECT, so, whatever you're doing Sultana, it's working for you...

My roommate recently sent me a picture she took a week or so ago. Looking at it, I felt really upset and sad. I just look too big. I've always felt that I could probably tone up a bit have talked about working on that. But I've never been too concerned because I've always been ok with how I look and what size I am. I'm going to print off the picture and use it as some motivation to actually go to the gym and stop eating so much chocolate.

Has anyone else had a point or specific reason why they decided they needed to be watching their weight and getting some exercise in there? How do you motivate yourself?

Agreed. I figure that I'm about 25 pounds over my ideal weight -- but if you went by a weight chart alone, you'd think I'd have to lose much more. That's because I've been lifting weights forever and carry a lot of extra muscle. For a woman, 5'8" , 155 pounds, with a lot of muscle is healthy. You may be carrying 10-15 pounds (or more) of muscle than the average woman.

Other factors are involved, too. My wife is 5'4", and in her youth a doctor told her that 150 pounds or so was her target weight, because her frame is heavy and broad. Her bones are very, very, thick. I'm eight inches taller and male, and her wrists are the same diameter as mine!

I have seen people lose muscle as well as fat when dieting, because they weren't careful or were obsessive about weight and didn't care if it was fat or muscle -- all weight was bad. Some people try to shape up, change their diet, and start exercising, and freak out when they gain a couple of pounds from weight training. But that's "good" weight, and frankly makes you more attractive -- shapes the body, changes the proportions in a good way , and so on.

When I first started weight training seriously, I put on about 15 pounds in six months -- and not all of it was muscle. But a few people actually asked me if I'd lost weight -- because much of the new weight was in my chest and shoulders and so made my upper body larger in proportion to my lower body.

I just got fed up with being overweight and one night after eating way to much at a restaurant I felt disgusted with myself, and decided to make a change. The next day I wrote down all the food that I liked and then went through and marked off the unhealthy foods, I decided that I would only eat the foods that were good for me.

Needless to say, it was a small list and giving up junk food, pizza and fried foods hurt, but I wanted to do this for myself first and for my family second, and didn't want to get to the point of health problems that could easily be avoided. So I sucked it up and did it, I also decided to join the gym, it was awkward at first as there are many toned and fit bodies in there but it didn't matter I wanted to do this.

Losing weight is a slow process and there is no magic bullet, it took a couple of months before people started noticing (I only told my immediate family and close friends) and the comments and the complements keep coming, that gives me a boost, not to mention I feel better both physically and mentally. I had to buy almost all new clothes, I've dropped 6 inches off my waist.

I found this is a pretty good link for dining out http://dietfacts.com/fastfood.asp it gives nutritional value of some menu items at quite a few restaurants, most don't publish their whole menu but some do.

You just have to find the trigger that MAKES you want it, and its all or nothing, you can't partially want to lose weight or get in shape you have to give it 100%..

Amen! I can't tell you how many people at my work are "on a diet" either recently or for several months and haven't lost a pound. They see my results and ask me how I did it. When I respond that it was a drastic lifestyle change (all low-fat foods, give up drinking, excersize) they all have the same response. "Well, that's too hard core, I'll do it my own way." And guess what, their way still includes a doughnut for breakfast, or a big cheeseburger for lunch, or perhaps a giant salad SWIMMING in an oily dressing.

It's obvious to me that they simply haven't fount that trigger to kick them into high gear.

well, don't be down on yourself! no one is allowed to down themselves in here

Also, keep in mind, everyone has pictures where they just don't look good... even if they are perfectly fit and beautiful/handsome...

Don't let a picture change how you feel about yourself... but if you do want to tone up a bit... then hit it to the gym or walking or jogging outside

As for motivation for myself... i've always been a type A personality... so i've been working out consistently since i was a young teen... i think some call it obessive compulsive

Just focus on cutting out the sugars and also trying to get more excercise and you'll start to feel better about your apperance in no time

let us know how your doing and feeling

Upon reading Sultana's comment here... this got me to thinking.

So i'm going to change me goal weight, and just lose about 5 pounds. I'm doing great this week! I won't do my weigh in yet until sunday... but i feel like my clothes are fitting better this week!

height weight charts put me at 127-141 as the range i should shoot for. So at 134 pounds... i think i'm right in there... but i want that last bit of perfect toning... so i'm shooting for about 129-130lbs.

Weight loss goal = ACHIEVED!!!

For this morning's weigh in I was finally able to crack the 200's. I came in at 198.5. I almost couldn't believe it. I had to get on and off the scale several times before I finally realized that the "weight loss" part of my diet is officially over. That's 111.5 pounds lost, which is actually a pound and a half over my goal. Look for some before and afters in the exhibition section sometime in the near future.

Now comes the maintainence part, which I have to admit, I'm a little nervous about. I do realize that my "diet" is not over, but it does have to change. I can't go back to my old habbits, nor do I even really want to. As I mentioned previously in this topic, I know how to lose weight, and I know how to gain weight. For my entire adult life, I have never actually maintained my weight at any point for any real length of time. I was either slowly gaining or quickly losing weight.

To the rest who have not yet reached their goal, keep going!! You WILL get there with hard work and dedication.

Way to go Coaster!!! 111 lbs is awesome man!

I've been thinking about the maintainence part myself as I get closer to my goal. You arent the only one wondering how to go about it. I actually like going to the gym, it gives me an hour or so just to think and reflect on whatever, so that will stay constant in my life, but as far as my diet...I'm not sure..

I was even thinking of continuing on my diet past my goal, I stopped really missing all the food I use to eat and even passed up the free pizza slices they were giving away in Kroger this afternoon, and as long as I'm happy and still motivated..what the hell...

Let us know what/how you plan to maintain, I've seen folks at work do the yo-yo dieting plans and I'm going to avoid that..

I just restarted tracking my food intake with my computer program in preparation for Lent, which is coming up at the end of the month. Each Lent I attempt to make a positive dietary change. The goal isn't necessarily weight loss, but rather an awareness of "you are what you eat". This year's goal is decreased sugar intake by eliminating sources of excess and refined sugar (think soda, candy, cookies) as well as things that have high fructose corn syrup hiding in them (lots of commercial breads).

My goal is to use Lent to bust through my weight loss plateau (I lost 20 lbs last spring, went from 185 to 165, mostly from illness) and drop another 9 lbs. to get down to 155 by Memorial Day.

This morning's weigh-in: 164.

Sushi is manna from...umm, the sea. Yeah. That is the realest food there is. Except for sea urchin. It's against my religion to eat anything with the word "urchin" in it.

I dropped below the 200 lbs mark this week..

198 lbs, total lost is 77 lbs and I'm 8 lbs away from my goal weight.

I go to the Dr next week for a follow up visit (minor back issues..I aggrovated while working out), so my goal was to get below 200 for the visit. Thanks for the posts of encouragement, this is part of how I keep going.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. I'll keep going with the updates, since I had an interesting week.

I went crazy Superbowl Sunday and ate and drank the way I "used to." Of course, I made sure I was in the mindset that this was an exception, and not the rule. It was actually quite strange, reaching for and eating all that bad stuff. I almost stopped myself several times when at the food table, my reflexes were pulling away from the high-fat foods.

2 Days later, I weighed in at 206, an 8lb gain! No wonder I was so huge, parties where I'd eat like that were almost every weekend. And if I wasn't at a party, I'd eat like that anyway. So I went back on the wagon this week and am back down to 199. Actually, this week I was adding some higher fat/calorie ingredients to my meals in a effort to maintain my weight, despite the Superbowl setback. (I figured the party weight was a temporary thing anyway)

thank you skier!

Weigh in today: down another pound to 129lbs. I've really been pushing the workouts and it's showing esp in my abs and general tone. Eating lots of rice and veggies.

My maintainece is going fine. I have been fluctuating between 198 and 203 for the last 2 weeks. I pretty much stick to what I was doing for breakfast and lunch during the week, and weekends tend to be whatever I feel like.
