Help me get a stove and fridge
 

I am moving in a week. I have to get a new fridge and a stove. I am very intrigued by stainless steel refrigirator and an electric stove. Can you please help me find one or the other or both for a good deal? I don't even know where to start. I trust you guys with your selections. I am on a budget, but I think I would be willing to spend the money for a quality fridge.

Where do you live? You might be better off posting this in one of the tilted regional sections. All anybody can do here is suggest the big national chains, which probably have decent deals but won't be able to tell you where the best ones are.

I bought my last fridge used from a classified ad, and it's worked out well, but it's certainly not top of the line.

Remember, magnets don't stick to stainless steel. This could be a feature or a bug, depending on your outlook.

Stanless steel can look nice but it is a pain to keep smudge free... fingerprints everywhere.

lol... You are kinda confused as to what stainless steel is.. It is called stainless because of how it is made. It is steel that has different types of other metals mixed with it to make it resistant to corrosion, rust, discoloration, etc.

It has nothing to do with grape juice or fingerprints or what not. Stainless steel appliances are bad ass, but I don't think I would ever buy them because they are hella expensive.

Agreed. My wife browses all the expensive appliance sites. Stainless has a nice finish which must be kept smudge-free. Stainless pans can develop water-spotting and lime deposits, don't kid yourself. There is such a thing as stainless steel polish, and it's needed if you want to keep your pans all shiny-new looking.

"Stainless" steel is called such mainly because it doesn't rust. For that reason, it was the first good substitute for silver in good-quality table-settings. Stainless is easier to maintain and easier to keep clean than other kinds of cooking surfaces, so for things like food prep counters and cooktops, it's great if you can justify the cost. In dishwashers, a stainless-steel interior is superior because soap scum and residue doesn't build up on the steel as much as it would on the traditional plastic interiors, and you don't end up so much with little flakes of old soap on your dishes after a couple of years.

But I honestly don't know what the advantage of a stainless steel refrigerator would be. It might be a little easier to keep clean on the inside -- if it _is_ steel on the inside -- and it might hold the cold a little better. But the few people I know who've gotten them, get them for their looks, to match other stainless appliances in the kitchen, and I don't know that this justifies the higher price.

I don't think the stainless steel appliances have any kind of stainless steel paneling or coating on the inside, I believe it's just on the outside for looks. I have seen dishwashers that are all stainless steel on the interior, and those are very cool.

I never thought about the fact that magnets didn't stick to stainless steel, I've never tested that, but that's something to think about, I suppose. Those really expensive fridges and such by Sub-Zero or Viking are pretty nice, but I just can't see dropping $4000-5000 on a FRIDGE! Maybe when I'm rich someday :)

Unless you cannot have one, why an electric stove? Gas stoves are so much easier to cook with and a lot easier to regulate the heat with.

With the fridge -- decide also what type of fridge you want. You might be limited by space for it -- but you can get a side by side, a freezer on top or freezer on bottom. Depending on your lifestyle, each one has advantages and disadvantages, and if you get one that doesn't suit your lifestyle, you might be frustrasted.

Ps, Frigidaire makes a stainless steel freezer on top fridge that's under 1000 dollars,it's not as snazzy as the Sub Zeros but it's got the look.

definitely the best place to start is by measuring the space available for each appliance. it's very easy to go to sears and see all the choices, pick one out that you like, and have it be too big for the space available... this is especially true with refrigerators.

i don't know what your living situation will be... house or apartment, short term or long term... but in my opinion that would dictate how much i'm going to spend. i'd definitely shell out more for a nice set of appliances if i was moving into a house on a long term basis, but if i were moving into an apartment with a short term lease or an undetermined amount of time, i'd probably get just enough to get me by. that way if you need to move far away, you won't feel bad about selling them cheap and leaving them behind... or if you move into a house, they'd get you by until you could get something nicer, and you could use the cheap fridge to store extra meat and stuff like that.

I'm not a big fan of the store, but when we needed a cheap fridge, we found exactly what we wanted at a great price at...Best Buy. We shopped around quite a bit.

When my SO and I finally decided to stop wasting the money on two mortages and establish a household together, one of the luxuries we splurged on was a Samsung Homepad It's awesome, but probably more than you'd want to spend.

Dont be afraid of spending a bit extra on the fridge. It's one appliance where the extra features can come in really handy, and if you can afford it, the extra thousand dollars that you spend on a really nice one compared to the average keeps stuff cold one buys a lot of convenience.

Cleaning fingermarks, etc, off stainless steel: A little baby oil (I mean a little, just a drop or two), on a kitchen towel. Works wonders!!! :D

As someonw suggested earlier - you need to access your needs first. There seem to be models to fit every situation. We like the SS. Our girls are teenagers so no real fingerprint issues.

I use Consumer Reports to do all my research. This Maytag is a top rated model. Right at two grand at the big Orange Store.

Stainless at a bargain? Whose chain are you trying to pull? Stainless is EXPENSIVE! No matter where you go. If you really want to try and go cheap, check out scratch-n-dent stores. Remember - you get what you pay for.
