If you're looking to primarily lose the few pounds on the gut, just doing crunches/sit-ups isn't going to do it. You'll have to do some cardio too. Running seems to work very well for this as does swimming. I don't know the true difference between a crunch and sit-up though, sorry I can't be of any more help.

You can't target different areas of your body for fat loss. You just have to exercise (cardio works best, when combined with resistance training to increase your muscle mass and a low crap diet) until your body decides that it's going to use the fat from your gut and burn it off.
A crunch typically only goes up to about a 50 degree angle from the floor, whereas a sit-up (which are generally thought of as less effective and more prone to injury) goes further, sometimes to your knees.

actually crunches will make your belly bigger at first because your muscles underneath the fat grows, but the fat stays.
