I superset leg extensions with leg presses and it works great for me. For the leg presses to work your butt you have to make sure and bring your knees in far enough towards your chest so that you're raising up your butt just a little bit everytime you bring down the weight. Lunges also work very well.

Stairs. Lots of them. If you have a bad back you don't want to be putting any stress on it beyond your natural body weight.

You also should be doing some stomach strengthening excersises. When your stomach is strong, you'll find that your back doesn't hurt or get hurt so much. I had two herniated disks in my lower back, I started doing bicycles and leg lifts, which are easy on the back. My back hasn't bothered me now in years.

I saw a great butt exercise by Michael Thurmond on the "Extreme makeover" show.
Stand, facing a wall, about 6-12 inches away. Put your hands up on the wall in front of you. Push your pelvis towards the wall just so that you heels lift off the floor, and then back down again. It kinda looks like you're having sexual intercourse with the wall, but you can really feel your butt tighten up each time. |

deadlift does awesome things for the hamstrings and glutes and works the lower back as a stabilizer. Just make sure to keep the back straight and bend at the hips, not the waist. Straight-leg Dead lift from exrx.net

Definitely do some core exercises. This is where most people are weakest and this will cause you the most injury if not strengthened. Pilates is great for working and strengthening the core. I think most people feel that if they cannot get a 6 pack, they are not going to work their core. This is the wrong thought process. You must work the midsection if you want to have an overall strong body. There are so many back injuries out there that could have been prevented in part by doing ab/back and oblique exercises.
